Chapter 7 - The Desperate Plea

The cold walls of the Rikers Island Correctional Facility offered no comfort. Without bail, Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark were stripped of their dignity and locked away as federal pre-trial detainees.

With their assets frozen by federal court orders, Richard Vance quickly abandoned them, citing non-payment of legal fees. They were left with public defenders who bluntly told them their options were simple: plead guilty and face reduced sentences, or go to trial and face up to twenty years in federal prison.

Broken and terrified, Evelyn begged her public defender to arrange a meeting with David.

Three days later, David walked into the prison visitation room. He wore a tailored dark suit, looking calm, successful, and entirely unaffected by the drama. He sat down behind the thick glass partition and picked up the phone handset.

Evelyn, her hair grey and disheveled, her skin pale, picked up her phone with trembling hands.

"David... my baby," Evelyn sobbed into the receiver, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. "Please... you have to stop this. Look at what you’re doing to your own mother! I carried you for nine months! I raised you!"

"You left my wife bleeding on a chair," David replied, his tone devoid of any emotion. "You left my eleven-day-old son wrapped in a rag in a freezing apartment while you drank four-hundred-dollar champagne in Miami with money you stole from my company."

"I was wrong! I was stupid! Chloe and Mark persuaded me!" Evelyn pleaded desperately, pointing fingers at her own daughter. "Mark was the one who forged the checks! I didn't understand what I was signing! Please, David... tell the prosecutor to drop the federal charges! I will sign over the upstate house! I will apologize to Maya on national television! Just don't let me die in prison!"

David listened quietly until she finished her desperate rant. Then, he leaned closer to the glass.

"Do you know what Maya said to me the night I found her?" David asked softly. "She begged me not to get mad at you. Even while she was suffering from an infection that nearly killed her, she was still trying to protect you because she thought you were my family."

Evelyn sobbed harder, pressing her palm against the glass. "She’s a good girl, David... I see that now! Please..."

"It’s too late, Evelyn," David said, using her first name for the first time in his life. "The prosecutors aren't doing this because I asked them to. They are doing it because you committed major federal crimes. You destroyed yourself through your own greed and cruelty. I’m not here to save you. I’m here to tell you that this is the last time you will ever see my face."

"David! No! Don't abandon me! I'm your mother!" Evelyn screamed, banging her fists against the glass as David stood up and buttoned his jacket.

"You ceased being my mother the moment you chose money over the life of my child," David said quietly.

He placed the receiver down, turned around, and walked out of the visitation room, never looking back.
