Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

The preliminary court hearing was set for a rainy Tuesday morning at the Manhattan Criminal Court. Outside the courthouse, media crews were lined up three deep, eager to capture the high-profile family feud.
Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark arrived flanked by Richard Vance, wearing expensive black suits designed to make them look respectable and dignified. Evelyn put on her best impression of a grieving, heartbroken mother, lowering her head as photographers flashed their cameras.
Inside the courtroom, Judge Patricia Vance (no relation to the attorney) took her seat on the bench. The room was packed to capacity.
Maya, fully recovered and looking radiant in a cream-colored wool suit, sat beside David at the prosecution's table. Her hand rested confidently in David’s grip. Across the aisle, Evelyn cast a venomous glare at Maya, mouthing the words, "You won't get away with this."
Judge Vance slammed her gavel. "We are here for the preliminary hearing regarding the charges of Grand Larceny, Criminal Neglect, and Child Endangerment against Evelyn Miller, Chloe Miller, and Mark Vance. Counsel, present your motions."
Richard Vance stood up smugly. "Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of all charges. The prosecution’s entire case relies on home surveillance footage that violates my clients' Fourth Amendment rights and state privacy statutes. Furthermore, this is a private family dispute that has been wildly exaggerated by Mr. Miller to humiliate his mother."
"Your Honor," David’s lead prosecutor, District Attorney Sarah Jenkins, stood up calmly. "We submit Exhibit A: A fully executed, notarized residential consent agreement signed by defendant Evelyn Miller six months ago, explicitly consenting to 24/7 high-definition audio and video surveillance in all common areas of the property."
Richard Vance’s face froze. He quickly turned to Evelyn, who suddenly looked extremely uncomfortable.
"Is this signature authentic, Mrs. Miller?" Judge Vance asked, examining the document.
"I... I didn't read it! He forced me to sign papers!" Evelyn stammered, panicking.
"Silence!" Judge Vance warned sternly. "The video evidence is entirely admissible. Motion to dismiss is denied."
"Furthermore, Your Honor," Prosecutor Jenkins continued, stepping forward with a fresh stack of documents. "The State of New York, in coordination with the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is expanding the indictment against all three defendants today."
The entire courtroom went silent.
"We are adding federal charges of Wire Fraud, Tax Evasion, and Corporate Embezzlement totaling $1.2 million," Jenkins announced, holding up the financial audit reports. "Defendants Mark Vance and Evelyn Miller operated illegal shell entities to siphon capital from the plaintiff's corporate operations while actively concealing income from state authorities."
Mark’s jaw dropped. He collapsed back into his chair, his face turning ghostly white. Chloe grabbed Mark’s arm, hysterically whisper-screaming, "Mark! What did you do?! You said the money was legal!"
"I... I didn't know they found those accounts!" Mark whimpered, breaking down in a cold sweat.
Evelyn gripped the edge of the defense table, her lungs gasping for air as the full weight of her actions slammed down upon her. She looked over at David, hoping to see a shred of pity, a glint of hesitation in her son’s eyes.

David looked back at her with eyes as lifeless and unyielding as granite.
"Bail is hereby revoked for all three defendants," Judge Vance declared, banging her gavel sharply. "They will remain in custody until trial."
