Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Corruption

Two days after Evelyn’s press conference, Marcus met David in a private conference room at David’s Manhattan engineering firm. Marcus laid out several thick leather-bound binders filled with financial audits, tax returns, and intercepted email chains.

"David, your sister’s husband, Mark, wasn't just taking that $6,000 monthly consulting fee from your company," Marcus explained, tapping a red line on a spreadsheet. "Over the past three years, Mark has been quietly forging your signature on sub-contractor procurement vouchers."

David leaned forward, staring at the numbers. "How much?"

"Over $1.2 million," Marcus revealed. "He created three dummy corporations based in Delaware. He funnelled money meant for structural steel suppliers directly into those accounts. And guess who the co-signatory on two of those shell accounts is?"

David’s face hardened. "My mother."

"Bingo," Marcus said. "Evelyn wasn't just a passive bystander enjoying your wealth. She was actively helping Mark embezzle funds from your engineering firm to pay off her personal gambling debts at casinos in Atlantic City and fund Chloe’s lavish lifestyle. They were planning to bleed your primary corporate account dry by the end of this year."

David felt a cold, sharp clarity wash over him. The betrayal wasn't just an act of emotional cruelty on New Year’s Eve; it was a calculated, long-term systematic leeching designed to destroy him financially while keeping him completely in the dark.

"What about the legal strategy for the assault and neglect charges?" David asked.

"Your mother’s lawyer, Richard Vance, is attempting to dismiss the security camera footage by claiming it was recorded illegally without consent," Marcus warned. "In New York State, privacy laws inside a residential home can get tricky if the defense argues the common areas had an expectation of privacy for long-term guests."

David smiled faintly, a terrifyingly calm expression.

"They forgot who bought and installed that system," David said. "When my mother signed the temporary residency agreement to stay at my apartment during Maya’s pregnancy, she signed a standard guest disclosure form. Paragraph 14 specifically states that all common areas are monitored for security and that consent is explicitly granted upon entry. I have her signature notarized."

"That closes their only loophole," Marcus said, grinning. "They have nowhere left to run."

"Not yet," David replied. "I want the IRS involved. If they want a public spectacle, I will give them a masterclass in total destruction."
