Chapter 3 - The Cold Backlash

By sunrise on January 1st, the news of the arrest had exploded across social media. David didn't just file criminal charges; he released the unedited, timestamped security camera footage directly to an investigative journalist friend at the New York Post.

The headline burned across internet feeds worldwide: "NYC EXECUTIVE TRICKED: FAMILY STEALS $14K MEDICAL FUND, LEAVES BLEEDING WIFE AND NEWBORN TO STARVE FOR MIAMI VACATION."

The video clips of Evelyn tossing a pack of instant noodles at the pale, bleeding Maya while carrying out imported baby formula became an overnight viral sensation. Millions of netizens expressed fury. The comment sections were flooded with condemnation, demanding maximum prison sentences for the mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

In the Miami-Dade County Detention Center, reality hit Evelyn and Chloe with brutal force. Dressed in orange jumpsuits, stripped of their designer makeup and jewelry, they sat in a crowded holding cell, surrounded by hardened offenders.

Mark, whose parents refused to post his bail out of utter shame after seeing the viral video, was in the men's wing, panicking as he realized his career was completely destroyed.

"We need a lawyer! Call David’s legal team!" Evelyn wailed to her court-appointed public defender during their ten-minute consultation window. "Tell David I’m his mother! He cannot allow me to sit in this filthy place!"

"Mrs. Miller, your son’s private legal firm just served us with civil paperwork," the public defender said bluntly, dropping a two-inch-thick stack of papers onto the table. "Your son isn't helping you. He’s suing you, your daughter, and your son-in-law for civil fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and theft. Furthermore, he has filed an emergency injunction freezing all assets connected to the family trust you previously shared."

"He froze the trust?!" Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest. "That trust holds my house in upstate New York!"

"Not anymore," the public defender replied dryly. "The property title shows the upstate house was bought entirely with funds from David’s business account. Since you violated the terms of the family stewardship agreement through fraudulent conversion of funds, he has initiated foreclosure proceedings. You are facing total financial liquidation and up to seven years in state prison."

Meanwhile, back in New York, Maya was transferred out of the ICU into a private, sunlit suite at Mount Sinai Hospital. Liam was resting comfortably in a heated bassinet beside her bed, his cheeks rosy and full after receiving proper medical nutrition.

David sat beside Maya’s bed, gently peeling an orange and placing pieces into her mouth. His face was soft, a sharp contrast to the cold monster he had been to his family over the last twenty-four hours.

"David..." Maya whispered softly, her eyes filling with tears as she looked at her husband. "Your mother... your sister... they'll hate you forever. I feel like I ruined your family."

David placed the orange down, took Maya’s fragile, trembling hands in his, and kissed her knuckles gently.

"Maya, listen to me very carefully," David said, his voice filled with unwavering resolve. "A family isn't defined by blood. It’s defined by love, protection, and duty. The day they left you bleeding on that floor to freeze with our baby boy, they ceased to be my family. You and Liam are my only family now. And I will burn down every bridge necessary to ensure no one ever hurts either of you again."

Maya sobbed, pulling David close as she buried her face into his shoulder. For the first time in weeks, she felt truly safe.

However, the war was far from over. From behind bars, Evelyn was preparing a dirty, desperate counterattack.
