Chapter 10 - A Bright New Year (Conclusion)

One year after that dark, freezing night, New Year’s Eve returned to New York City.

Outside, soft white snow fell gently over the brownstone streets of Brooklyn. Inside David and Maya’s home, a tall pine tree sparkled with warm golden lights. The scent of roasted turkey, cinnamon, and fresh baked pie filled the warm, cozy house.

There were no toxic relatives, no hidden motives, and no fear.

Joining them around the large dining table were true friends—Captain Harris and his family, Marcus, and Maya’s sweet parents, who had flown in from their quiet hometown to spend the holidays with their grandson.

Liam, now a healthy, active toddler taking his first clumsy steps, giggled as Maya’s father gently pushed him in a small wooden toy car across the hardwood floor.

At 11:59 p.m., as the countdown to the midnight ball drop began on the television screen, David poured glasses of sparkling cider for everyone. He stood beside Maya, holding her hand tightly while holding Liam in his other arm.

"Five! Four! Three! Two! One! Happy New Year!"

Cheer and laughter echoed through the warm room. Fireworks lit up the winter night sky through the large bay windows, casting colorful light across the happy family.

Maya leaned up and kissed David deeply, her eyes brimming with tears of pure happiness.

"Happy New Year, my love," she whispered.

"Happy New Year, Maya," David smiled, looking down at his bright, healthy son, who was reaching out his tiny hands toward the twinkling lights on the Christmas tree.
