Chapter 2 - Luxury in South Beach

Over thirteen hundred miles south, at the grand Penthouse Suite of the Five-Star Ritz-Carlton in South Beach, Miami, the New Year’s celebration was in full swing. Ocean breeze blew gently through the open glass doors, carrying the rhythm of high-end lounge music and the smell of expensive champagne.

Evelyn Miller, dressed in an extravagant silk robe purchased with David’s credit card, reclined on a velvet lounge chair, sipping a $400 glass of Vintage Dom Pérignon. Beside her, Chloe was snapping selfies with her husband, Mark, and Mark’s parents, whom they had invited along to display their newfound "wealth."

"I’m telling you, Mom, David is never going to miss fourteen grand," Mark bragged, slicing into a piece of imported Wagyu beef that had been bought with David’s corporate account. "He makes millions running that firm. Besides, as his mother, you deserve this resort treatment far more than that farm girl he married."

"Of course I do," Evelyn sneered, adjusting her diamond necklace. "Maya thought she struck gold marrying my son. Giving birth by C-section... please! She’s acting like she fought in a war. Leaving her with instant noodles was generous enough. She needs to know her place in this family."

Chloe laughed, holding up her phone. "I posted the photos of our yacht charter on Instagram! Everyone back home thinks we’re living like royalty."

Suddenly, Mark’s phone beeped with a series of aggressive notification alerts. He glanced at the screen, and his smile instantly vanished.

"Wait... what is this?" Mark muttered, his brow furrowing. "My card was just declined for the late-night cabana service."

"What do you mean declined?" Chloe snapped, sipping her cocktail. "Try David’s platinum card."

Mark quickly swiped the secondary card through the hotel's mobile payment terminal. A bright red error flashed across the screen: ACCOUNT REVOKED / AUTHORIZATION DENIED.

"That’s impossible!" Evelyn stood up, her face turning pale. "David’s credit limit is two hundred thousand dollars! Try it again!"

Before Mark could re-enter the details, the suite’s phone rang, and simultaneously, heavy, authoritative knocks echoed from the double oak doors of their penthouse suite.

Mark shuffled over to the door, feeling an unexpected lump of anxiety forming in his throat. "Who is it at midnight?"

He opened the door. Standing in the hallway were four uniformed Miami Beach Police officers, flanked by two plainclothes detectives and the hotel's night manager, whose expression was grim and unyielding.

"Are you Evelyn Miller, Chloe Miller, and Mark Vance?" the lead detective asked, holding up a sleek leather badge.

"Yes... what is the meaning of this intrusion?" Evelyn demanded, stepping forward with her chin raised. "Do you know who we are? My son is a high-level corporate executive in New York! We are guests in this penthouse!"

"Ma'am, your son is precisely why we are here," the detective replied coldly. "At 12:15 AM, the New York City Police Department issued felony arrest warrants for all three of you. The charges include Grand Larceny over $10,000, Child Endangerment, Criminal Neglect of a Vulnerable Adult, and Fraud."

Chloe shrieked in horror. "What?! That's insane! David gave us that money! This is a family matter!"

"Mr. David Miller has provided sworn affidavits, bank transfer receipts, and comprehensive audio-visual footage from inside his Manhattan residence proving you stole medical funds, stripped the apartment of essential baby supplies, and abandoned a hemorrhaging mother and newborn," the detective stated sternly. "Furthermore, Mr. Miller has revoked all financial authorizations. The hotel management has pressed additional charges for unpaid balances exceeding $18,000."

"No! You can't do this to us!" Evelyn screamed as an officer grabbed her wrists and pulled them behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs into place. "David! Call David right now! He’s my son! He can't do this to his mother!"

"Your son personally signed the criminal complaint, ma'am," the officer said, ratcheting the cuffs tight. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the family was marched in handcuffs through the glitzy lobby of the Ritz-Carlton—in full view of dozens of wealthy holiday partygoers filming on their smartphones—Evelyn’s phone chimed in her purse.
