Chapter 9 - RECLAIMING THE THRONE

A year passed.

Under Victoria’s mentorship, I underwent a profound transformation. I enrolled in executive business courses, studied international law, and took an active role in managing the Valentine Foundation’s philanthropic endeavors. The shy, insecure girl who used to wear cotton dresses and hide by the dessert table was gone forever. In her place stood a confident, educated, and formidable young woman.

On the floor of the grand opening of the Elena & Valentina Shelter for Women—built on the demolished grounds of the old Villalobos mansion—I stepped up to the podium before hundreds of distinguished guests, journalists, and city leaders.

I wore an elegant ivory suit, my posture regal and commanding. Victoria sat in the front row, holding a one-year-old Valentina, who smiled and clapped her tiny hands.

"One year ago, on this exact piece of land, I was told that I was nobody," I began, my voice clear and powerful, broadcasting live across national news. "I was told that because I lacked wealth and status, I had no right to dignity, safety, or respect. I was physically attacked and emotionally discarded by people who believed their money made them invincible."

The audience listened in complete silence.

"But standing here today, on the ruins of their arrogance, I want to deliver a message to every woman who has ever been abused, belittled, or made to feel worthless," I continued, looking directly into the cameras. "Your current pain does not define your future potential. Wealth is temporary, but true strength comes from resilience, truth, and love. This center will serve as a sanctuary for those who need a second chance, a place where no one will ever be left to suffer alone."

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Photographers flashed their cameras as I stepped down from the podium and embraced my mother and daughter.

That evening, a quiet report aired on the news in the common room of the state women's prison. Sitting on a hard plastic chair, wearing an orange jumpsuit, Doña Carmela watched the broadcast on a small television set.

She saw me—gorgeous, powerful, and universally respected—standing alongside my mother and holding the healthy granddaughter Carmela had tried to destroy. Carmela reached out a trembling, aged hand toward the screen, but a prison guard stepped in front of her, turning off the TV for the night.

Carmela was left sitting in the dark, surrounded by cold concrete walls, completely forgotten by the world she had once tried to rule.
