Chapter 5 - THE DESPERATE RECKONING

A week after the incident, I was finally discharged from St. Jude’s Hospital. My mother brought me to the Valentine Estate—a massive, private fortress nestled in the hills, surrounded by lush gardens, state-of-the-art security, and absolute tranquility. For the first time in months, I felt safe. I could breathe without fear of judgement or physical harm.

However, Mateo had been stalking the perimeter of the hospital and managed to follow our convoy at a distance using a borrowed, beat-up sedan.

Late that evening, as a heavy rain began to pour over the estate, Mateo tried to climb the perimeter fence near the service entrance. The moment his feet touched the inner grounds, silent alarms triggered throughout the property. Before he could make it ten yards toward the main house, three spotlights blinded him, and four armed security guards pinned him to the muddy ground.

Victoria and I were sitting in the glass conservatory, drinking warm tea, when the head of security entered.

"Ma'am, we caught an intruder on the south lawn. It’s Mateo Villalobos."

Victoria looked at me gently. "Do you want me to have him arrested for trespassing, Elena? Or do you want to end this yourself?"

I took a deep breath, feeling the firm kick of my baby inside my belly. I was no longer the frightened, quiet girl who hid near the dessert table.

"I'll talk to him," I said firmly.

Accompanied by Victoria and two guards, I walked out to the sheltered portico where Mateo was being held on his knees, soaked in rain and covered in mud. When he looked up and saw me, his eyes filled with desperate hope.

"Elena! Please!" Mateo cried out, trying to reach for me, but the guards held him firm. "Elena, I’m so sorry! I was wrong! My mother is crazy, she forced me to be like that! I love you, Elena! Please, talk to your mother, tell her to stop this! We can be a family again!"

I walked up to him, stopping just out of his reach. I looked down at the man I had once thought was my protector.

"You didn't love me, Mateo," I said, my voice steady and cold. "You loved having a quiet, obedient wife who would take your mother’s abuse so you wouldn't have to face her yourself. When she raised that bat to hit your child, you looked at your shoes."

"I was scared!" Mateo sobbed, wiping mud from his face. "You know how she is!"

"You were a grown man," I replied. "And you chose your mother's cruelty over your wife's safety. There is no going back, Mateo. My baby and I do not need a coward in our lives."

Victoria stepped forward, dropping a thick legal packet onto the wet pavement in front of him.

"These are permanent restraining orders," Victoria declared. "If you step within five hundred yards of my daughter or my grandchild ever again, you will go straight to prison. Sign them, and leave."

Mateo looked at the papers, then at my cold, unyielding face. The realization hit him like a physical blow: his marriage, his luxury, his entire future was completely gone. With trembling hands, he took the pen offered by the guard and signed his name on the line.
