Chapter 3 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

By Monday morning, the Villalobos family woke up not to their usual luxury, but to absolute chaos.

At 7:00 AM, Mateo arrived at the headquarters of Villalobos Logistics, the family’s core commercial enterprise, only to find the main gates chained shut. Federal agents and forensic accountants were filing in and out of the glass building, carrying boxes of financial ledgers.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Mateo demanded, rushing up to the lead agent. "I am the Vice President of this company!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Villalobos," the agent replied coldly, holding up a federal warrant. "Your firm’s assets have been frozen due to suspected grand scale money laundering and systemic tax fraud. Furthermore, your primary credit line with Valentine Global Banking was revoked at midnight. You are insolvent."

Mateo’s phone began ringing incessantly. It was his mother.

"Mateo! Where are you?!" Doña Carmela screamed through the speaker, her voice trembling with hysteria. "The bank just declined my cards at the salon! And there are men in suits at the front gate of the mansion with eviction notices! What is happening?!"

"Mother... it’s her," Mateo stammered, falling to his knees on the pavement outside his closed office. "It’s her mother. She meant what she said."

Panic spread through the entire Villalobos clan like wildfire. The aunts and cousins who had laughed so loudly at the Sunday barbecue were now finding their bank accounts frozen, their luxury lease agreements canceled, and their credit cards rejected at every high-end establishment in the city. The social status they had used as a weapon to humiliate me had vanished in less than twenty-four hours.

Desperate to contain the damage, Doña Carmela ordered Mateo to drive to St. Jude’s Hospital. She was convinced that if she could force me to sign a liability waiver and convince the press that it was all a "family misunderstanding," the financial pressure would cease.

Around 2:00 PM, Mateo and Carmela strode into the VIP wing of the hospital. Carmela was dressed in her usual designer attire, trying desperately to maintain her arrogant facade, though her eyes were bloodshot and erratic.

When they reached my suite, they were met by two armored security guards standing outside the double doors.

"Get out of my way," Carmela snapped, regaining a fraction of her usual pomposity. "I am here to see my daughter-in-law. This is a private family matter."

The doors opened, and Victoria stepped out into the hallway. She looked immaculate, wearing a dark burgundy suit, her expression cool and indifferent.

"You are not family," Victoria said quietly. "You are defendants."

"Listen here, woman!" Carmela hissed, stepping closer. "I don't know who you think you are, but you can't just ruin our family because of a little domestic dispute! Mateo is her husband! Legally, he has rights over her and that baby!"

"Husband?" Victoria chuckled, a sound entirely devoid of humor. She pulled a blue folder from under her arm and tossed it onto the small table beside the guards. "Mateo’s marriage certificate was filed using fraudulent residency documents provided by your corrupt family lawyer to bypass prenuptial laws. As of two hours ago, the marriage has been annulled by a high court judge."

Mateo looked as if he had been struck by lightning. "Annulled? No... Elena wouldn't do that to me!"

"Elena didn't have to," Victoria replied coldly. "I did. Now, listen to me very carefully, Carmela. You have precisely two options. Option one: you sign over your family’s remaining equity to cover the civil damages for the assault on my daughter, and you voluntarily vacate your mansion. Option two: my legal team submits the unedited footage from your security cameras—which we acquired this morning—showing you hitting a pregnant woman with a baseball bat. You will spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary."

Carmela’s face drained of all color. The realization finally hit her: she wasn't dealing with a weak, defenseless girl anymore. She was dealing with a apex predator.
