Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

The storm began to clear as dawn broke over the East River, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink. The dock was now crawling with Damiano’s cleanup crews, erasing every trace of the night’s violence before the city woke up.

The door of the armored vehicle opened, and Damiano stood there, soaking wet from the rain, his black coat draped over his arm. He looked tired, but his eyes were clear and bright.

"It’s done," he said simply, reaching out his hand to help me down.

I stepped out into the crisp morning air, taking his hand. "Vincent?"

"Dead," Damiano replied quietly. "And Bianca has been handed over to international authorities on human trafficking and terrorism charges. The Vance family syndicate in Chicago has collapsed. There is no one left to threaten you or Emma."

I took a deep breath, the heavy weight that had rested on my chest for years finally lifting away. I was free. Emma was safe.

We rode back to the estate in comfortable silence, hands tightly interwoven on the leather seat between us. When we arrived, Emma was waiting in the main foyer, running toward us the moment the heavy doors swung open.

"Mommy! Mr. Damiano!" she squealed, throwing her arms around Damiano’s leg.

Damiano immediately dropped to one knee, lifting her effortlessly into his arms. "Hey there, little agent. Did you guard the house while I was gone?"

"I did!" Emma announced proudly, pointing to her rag doll. "Sally and I kept watch!"

Damiano chuckled, a rich, warm sound that filled the grand hallway. He looked at Emma, then turned his gaze to me, his expression softening into profound tenderness.

"You did a great job, Emma," Damiano said gently. "In fact, you did such a good job, I think we need to make your stay here permanent."

Emma’s eyes widened with excitement. "Really? We get to stay in the giant house with the big garden?"

"If your mommy agrees," Damiano said, looking straight at me, his heart on his sleeve for the first time.

I felt tears of pure relief and joy spring to my eyes. I stepped forward, putting my arms around both of them. "Mommy definitely agrees."
