Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The lock on the heavy oak door of the west parlor clicked into place, but the silence inside offered no comfort. I pulled Emma into my arms, sinking onto the plush velvet sofa as my mind reeled. Outside, the mansion was eerily quiet—a silence forged by decades of absolute authority. Damiano Moretti was a man who ruled New York’s underground with an iron grip, but today, that power had been targeted from the inside.
"Mommy, is the shiny lady mad at me?" Emma asked, her small voice trembling against my chest.
"No, sweetheart. You did a brave thing," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her soft hair while trying to keep my own hands from shaking.
The "shiny lady" could only be one person: Bianca Vance. She was the daughter of the Chicago Syndicate chief, an heiress to a vast fortune, and Damiano’s fiancee. The marriage was supposed to seal an alliance that would end a decade of bloodshed along the East Coast. If Bianca was involved, the peace treaty wasn't just a failure—it was a trap designed to wipe out the entire leadership of five families in a single, devastating explosion.
A muffled commotion resonated through the heavy walls, followed by the heavy tread of tactical boots marching down the corridor. Minutes stretched like hours until the lock turned again. I braced myself, shielding Emma as the door swung open.
Damiano stood in the frame. His tailored suit jacket was gone, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the dark ink of a tiger tattoo curling up his throat. Behind him stood five men, each wearing tailored dark suits, their expressions carved from stone. These were the five Mafia dons of the East Coast—men whose names were whispered like curses in the shadows.
"Damiano, what is the meaning of this?" demands Don Falcone, an older man with silver hair and eyes like polished steel. "You call us here under a flag of truce, evacuating the estate like rats running from a fire?"
Damiano didn't answer Falcone immediately. Instead, his dark gaze swept over the room before settling on me and Emma. He stepped aside, allowing his head of security, Matteo, to display a small metal briefcase containing a deactivated plastic explosive attached to a digital detonator.
"Thirty minutes ago, this was armed beneath my desk," Damiano said, his voice smooth, devoid of emotion, yet carrying an edge sharp enough to cut glass. "It was rigged to detonate the moment the ink dried on our peace treaty. None of us would have survived."
Gasps echoed among the dons. Accusations immediately flew, fingers pointed, and weapons were drawn half an inch from holsters.
"Who planted it?" demanded Don Russo, the youngest of the five, his hand hovering over his waistband.
Damiano walked slowly toward Emma and me. He knelt in front of my daughter, his towering, intimidating presence softening in a way that shocked everyone in the room.
"The man with the sad eyes—your uncle’s driver, Marco—was caught trying to slip past the perimeter," Damiano said softly to Emma. "And the lady who threatened your mother... is currently in custody."
He stood up, turning his back on the nervous dons, and looked straight at me. "Sophia saved all of our lives tonight through her daughter’s vigilance. But Bianca’s betrayal proves that our enemies are already within our house."
"Then execute the girl's family and let's get back to business!" Falcone snapped impatiently.
Damiano turned slowly, his eyes locking onto Falcone with a intensity that made the older man take an involuntary step back.
"She is not collateral, Falcone," Damiano said, his voice echoing through the parlor. "As of this moment, Sophia and Emma are under my personal protection. Anyone who looks at them with bad intent looks at me."
He stepped closer to me, taking my ice-cold hand in his warmth. He looked at the five dons, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a declaration that would alter the balance of power forever.

"The wedding with Bianca Vance is off. From this night forward, Sophia is my primary concern. And I am declaring total war on anyone tied to this plot."
The room fell into stunned silence. I looked into Damiano's eyes, seeing a dangerous promise taking shape—one that would drag Emma and me into a world of shadow, luxury, and unspeakable danger.
