Chapter 4 - The Heiress's Curse

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The pieces of the puzzle began clicking together with terrifying speed. Why had Bianca looked at Emma with such bitter hatred in the hallway? Why had she warned Emma about her mother losing her home?

"They didn't just want you dead," I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. "They wanted Emma."

"Vincent Vance has no legitimate male heirs," Damiano explained, his posture rigid. "His empire relies on blood ties. Julian’s death in a street brawl in Chicago six months ago left Emma as the last direct bloodline to the Vance estate. Bianca knew if she married me, she could claim Emma under the guise of an alliance, consolidating control over both New York and Chicago."

I buried my face in my hands, struggling to breathe. "I brought her right into the lion’s den. I took a job in your house thinking I was escaping my past, and all I did was walk her right into their trap."

Strong, warm hands wrapped around my wrists, gently pulling my hands away from my face. Damiano was kneeling before me, his dark eyes intense and unwavering.

"Look at me, Sophia," he commanded softly.

I looked up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.

"You didn't lead her into a trap. You brought her to the one place in the world where no one can hurt her," he promised, his thumb wiping a tear from my cheek. "Vincent Vance may have blood claims, but I have the power of New York behind me. As long as I draw breath, no one touches you or Emma."

"Why?" I choked out, overwhelmed by the intensity of his pledge. "You barely know us. We are just an employee and her child to you."

Damiano stood up, walking toward the window once more, his back to me. "When I was seven years old, I watched my father get taken by men he trusted. My mother spent the rest of her life in fear, hiding in dark corners, waiting for the blow to fall. I swore when I took control of this family that I would never allow innocent people under my roof to live in fear."

He turned back to look at me, a soft, rare smile touching the corners of his lips. "And besides... your daughter saved my life. I am a man who always pays his debts."

That evening, dinner was served in the main dining room. For the first time, Damiano ate with us, sitting at the head of the long mahogany table with Emma at his right and me at his left. Emma, completely unfazed by the surrounding guards, chattered away about her favorite books and her doll.

To my amazement, Damiano listened intently, answering her silly questions with remarkable patience. The terrifying Mafia Don, capable of bringing empires to their knees, was gently cutting a steak into tiny pieces for a six-year-old girl.

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died.

Emergency red backup lights immediately flooded the grand room. Downstairs, the sharp sound of gunfire echoed through the high ceilings.
