Chapter 22

CHAPTER 22: The High-Rise Trap

The downtown high-rise was a towering monolith of glass and steel. Marcus’s architectural firm occupied the top two floors, currently empty for weekend renovations.

At 7:45 PM, Danielle and Marcus arrived. They had coordinated with private security and the lead detective from the night before, setting a meticulous trap to catch Silas on extortion charges.

But Silas was not a fool. He was a cornered rat.

He didn't wait in the lobby. He had bypassed the front desk entirely, using stolen maintenance keycards.

As Danielle stepped out of the elevator on the 40th floor, the power to the floor suddenly cut out. The hallway was plunged into emergency red lighting.

Click.

The sound of a heavy latch engaging echoed through the corridor. Silas stepped out from the shadows of the stairwell, holding a heavy steel wrench. But he wasn't looking at Danielle.

He was looking at Amara, who had insisted on staying fiercely close to Marcus and had slipped out of the elevator behind them.

"A trap for a trap," Silas sneered, lunging forward with terrifying speed.

Before Marcus could react, Silas grabbed Amara by the arm, dragging the terrified girl backward into the maintenance stairwell.
