Chapter 24

CHAPTER 24: The High-Stakes Rescue

"Stay back!" Silas roared over the sound of the howling wind, teetering dangerously close to the edge of the forty-story drop.

"Let her go, Silas!" Marcus commanded, stepping to the left to flank him, his hands raised in a placating gesture to draw the man's attention.

Danielle stood dead center. The subtle emotional depth of the moment demanded absolute control. She could not panic, or Silas would pull her daughter over the edge.

She locked eyes with Silas. She saw the manic desperation of a man who realized he had lost everything.

"Silas, look at me," Danielle said, her voice suddenly dropping the anger, replacing it with a profound, disarming empathy. She took one slow step forward. "David ruined your life. He lied to you, just like he lied to me. He stole your money, and he left you to burn."

Silas blinked, his grip on Amara loosening by a fraction of a millimeter. The validation of his anger caught him off guard.

"But David is dead," Danielle continued, her voice cutting through the wind like a razor. "If you hurt her, you don't get your money. You just get a life sentence. This ends right now. Drop the wrench, and walk away."

For a split second, Silas hesitated.

It was all Marcus needed.

With explosive speed, Marcus lunged from the blind spot, tackling Silas around the waist. The impact knocked the wrench clattering across the gravel roof.

Silas lost his grip, and Amara stumbled forward.

Danielle caught her daughter mid-air, wrapping her body entirely around the small girl, collapsing onto the safety of the rooftop gravel. She buried her face in Amara’s hair, her chest heaving with violent, relieved sobs.

Marcus pinned Silas to the concrete just as the heavy rooftop doors burst open, swarming with tactical police officers.
