Chapter 21

CHAPTER 21: The Ultimatum

The next morning, the burner phone Marcus had confiscated from David's old belongings years ago—and kept in a lockbox just in case—began to ring.

Danielle answered it, pressing the phone to her ear.

"You saw my visit," Silas's gravelly voice slithered through the receiver. "David owed me a hundred grand before he died. I have forged documents that can tie Amara's biological mother to massive fraud. I can drag that little girl through the foster system for years, Danielle. Unless you pay me what your dead husband owed."

Emotional tension crackled through the cellular connection.

Danielle closed her eyes, taking one deep, natural breath. She did not raise her voice. She did not plead.

"You made a fatal miscalculation, Silas," Danielle said smoothly. "You came into my home. You hurt my daughter. I will meet you at Marcus's downtown office building at 8:00 PM tonight. We will settle this face-to-face."

She hung up before he could respond.
