Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Century

Six months later, the Federal Courthouse was surrounded by thousands of citizens, journalists, and activists. The trial of Arthur Vance and the Aegis Group syndicate had captivated the world, becoming a historic symbol of corporate corruption finally brought to justice.
Inside the packed courtroom, Clara Sterling stood at the witness stand.
She wore an elegant dark blue suit, her health fully restored, her posture straight and proud. No longer a hidden janitor living in fear, she was now the primary witness for the United States Department of Justice.
Over three grueling weeks of testimony, Clara’s meticulous records and the evidence retrieved from her binder shattered Vance’s defense. The jury took less than two hours to reach a verdict: guilty on all 42 counts, including grand larceny, corporate espionage, treason, and attempted murder.
Arthur Vance was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Outside the courtroom steps, hundreds of reporters pressed forward, microphones raised as Rowan Mercer stepped out into the sunshine, flanked by Clara and Lily.
“Mr. Mercer!” a reporter yelled above the noise. “With the board gone and the company restructured, what is the future of Mercer Global?”
Rowan smiled, stepping aside to let Clara take the microphone.
“Mercer Global is changing,” Rowan announced clearly. “As of this morning, the Board of Directors has been officially dissolved and replaced by an independent ethical oversight committee. And I am proud to introduce the new Head of Corporate Integrity and Chief Financial Officer—Clara Sterling.”
The crowd erupted in applause. Clara smiled through tears of joy, taking Rowan’s hand in gratitude.
“And what about Lily?” another reporter called out. “Will she be going back to school?”

Rowan looked down at the little girl standing beside him. Lily was wearing a bright yellow dress and brand-new, polished shoes. In her hands, she held a small leather backpack instead of a paper lunch bag.
“Lily has a very important job,” Rowan said with a warm smile. “She’s the official Chief Promise Inspector of my company.”
