Chapter 7 - The Final Leverage

The guard stepped toward Lily, pulling a knife from his belt.

“Don't touch her!” Rowan roared.

Rowan fired two rounds, hitting the guard’s shoulder and forcing him back. The second guard returned fire, forcing Rowan to take cover behind a rack of humming server towers. Bullets ripped through delicate fiber-optic cables, showering the dark room with bright blue sparks.

Vance lunged toward Lily himself, grabbing her small arm and ripping the iron key from her hand.

“Got it,” Vance hissed, shoving the small girl to the floor. He rushed back to the console and jammed the iron key into the physical drive slot.

“AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED,” the computerized voice chimed through the server room speakers. “BIOMETRIC MATCH NEEDED FOR CLARA STERLING.”

Vance froze, staring at the screen in disbelief. “What? No... no! The physical key should override it!”

Rowan stepped out from behind the server rack, his eyes burning with lethal calm.

“Clara knew you’d come for the key eventually, Arthur,” Rowan said, stepping over the fallen guard. “She updated the security protocols four years ago before you framed her. The key is useless without her print.”

Vance’s face contorted in rage. He yanked a sidearm from his coat and pointed it directly at Lily, who was huddled on the floor near the server rack.

“Then bring her down here,” Vance screamed, his composure completely shattered. “Bring her down here in five minutes, or I put a bullet in this child’s head! Let’s see how much your promises are worth now, Rowan!”

Lily looked up at Rowan, tears streaming down her soot-stained cheeks. She pulled something out from her pocket—the cracked rubber gloves her mother used for cleaning.

“Mr. Rowan...” she sobbed softly. “I’m sorry... I just wanted to help Mom...”

Rowan looked at the little girl, then at Vance. A cold, dangerous stillness settled over him.

“You picked the wrong kid to threaten, Arthur,” Rowan said quietly.
