Chapter 1 - The Shadow in Apartment 3B

Rowan’s heart hammered against his ribs as he stepped past the threshold of the narrow hallway. The air inside Apartment 3B smelled faintly of damp plaster and cheap disinfectant. The little girl, whose name he had only just learned was Lily, was frozen near the kitchen table, her small hand covering her mouth.
On the floor beside the overturned chair lay a woman—pale, fragile, and motionless. But it wasn’t just her mother’s unconscious body that made Rowan stop cold. Sitting on the kitchen table, illuminated by a sliver of gray morning light filtering through a cracked window, was a thick, black leather binder stamped with a golden emblem Rowan recognized instantly: the crest of Mercer Global Enterprises.
Next to the binder lay a phone, its screen still glowing with an unsent text message addressed to an unknown number: “I have the original audit logs. If anything happens to me, check the bottom of—”
“Mom!” Lily cried out, breaking the silence as she threw herself beside her mother.
Dr. Aris Thorne, whom Rowan had dragged along from the executive clinic, rushed past Rowan and dropped to his knees. He pressed two fingers to the woman’s neck, checking for a pulse while pulling a diagnostic scanner from his bag. “She’s alive, Rowan,” Dr. Thorne said rapidly. “Severe dehydration, acute exhaustion, and a fever running dangerously high. But there are physical bruises on her wrists. Rowan... these aren't from a fall.”
Rowan’s eyes snapped from the woman’s bruised skin to the leather binder. He stepped forward and flipped open the first page. His stomach dropped into a cold abyss. Inside were internal memos, signed transfers, and off-the-books wire transactions detailing a systematic siphon of company assets—totaling over $400 million over the last three years. And every authorization bore the digital signature of Arthur Vance, the Chairman of his own Board of Directors.
Lily’s mother, Clara, had not just been a night-shift janitor. She was former internal auditor Clara Sterling, a woman who had mysteriously vanished from the corporate world four years ago after a whistleblowing scandal that almost destroyed her reputation.
Clara stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. Her feverish eyes darted around the room until they locked onto Rowan. A look of sheer panic washed over her face.
“Mr... Mr. Mercer?” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “You... you shouldn't be here. They know. They know I found the secondary ledger...”
“Who knows, Clara?” Rowan demanded softly, kneeling beside Dr. Thorne. “Who did this to you?”
“The board...” Clara gasped, struggling for air as Dr. Thorne placed an oxygen mask over her face. “They didn't just fire me four years ago... they trapped me. They told me if I ever spoke, they’d take Lily. I had to hide in plain sight... cleaning their offices... watching them...”
Before Rowan could digest the revelation, the front door frame creaked.
Two men in dark suits stepped into the apartment. Neither looked like a landlord or a paramedic. One of them reached into his jacket, pulling out a silenced pistol.

“Mr. Mercer,” the lead man said coldly. “You were supposed to be in the board meeting negotiating the acquisition. You really shouldn't have opened that paper bag.”
Rowan stood up slowly, positioning himself between the armed men, Lily, and her mother. The rain outside lashed violently against the window panes as the room descended into a tense standoff where a single breath could mean life or death.
