Chapter 10 - Promises Kept

One year later, on a bright, sun-kissed Tuesday morning, the marble lobby of Mercer Tower was bustling with energy.
The giant corporate logo above the entrance had been redesigned, incorporating a subtle emblem of an open paper bag—a daily reminder to every executive who walked through the doors about humility, truth, and humanity.
On the 29th floor, where the dark boardroom once stood, was now the Sterling Foundation Learning Center—a state-of-the-art educational facility funded entirely by Mercer Global, dedicated to providing free education, healthcare, and shelter for children of low-income workers across the city.
Inside the sunlit room, dozens of children were playing, reading, and laughing.
Rowan stood near the large window, holding a fresh cup of coffee, watching Clara lead a group of young mothers through a corporate mentorship seminar. His life, once defined solely by stock prices, profit margins, and cold corporate acquisitions, had found a real purpose.
A soft tug on his jacket made him look down.
Lily stood there, holding a familiar paper lunch bag.
“Are you missing a shift, Chief Inspector?” Rowan asked, kneeling down to her eye level with a smile.
“No,” Lily laughed, her blue eyes shining with pure happiness. “I brought you lunch. But there are no cracked gloves inside this time.”
Rowan opened the paper bag. Inside was a fresh, unbruised red apple, a perfectly made sandwich, and a small handmade card drawn in bright crayon.
On the front of the card, written in neat child handwriting, were the words: “Thank you for keeping your promise.”
Rowan felt a lump in his throat. He wrapped his arms around the little girl who had saved his soul with a paper lunch bag and threadbare shoes.

“I’ll always keep my promises, Lily,” Rowan whispered softly. “Always.”
Outside the high glass windows, the city sparkled in the clear daylight, free from shadows, as a new story of hope, love, and family began.
