Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Machine

Rowan sprinted down the concrete fire stairwell, bypassing twenty floors in a frantic descent. His heart hammered against his ribs; his lungs burned. The true scope of Arthur Vance’s plot was finally unraveling. Vance didn't just want money; he wanted complete control over the global logistics network that Mercer Global commanded.
When Rowan burst into Sub-Level 3, the underground server room was eerily quiet, bathed in the red glow of emergency backup lights.
Standing in front of a rusted metal janitorial locker at the end of the aisle was Arthur Vance himself, wearing a dark raincoat, holding a military-grade data extraction device connected to an open server port. Beside him stood two armed guards.
“You always were too stubborn for your own good, Rowan,” Vance said smoothly, without turning around as the extraction bar on his screen hit 85%. “If you had just stayed in that two-billion-dollar acquisition meeting, you’d be the richest man in Asia tomorrow. Now? You’re just another casualty of corporate restructuring.”
“It’s over, Arthur,” Rowan said, stepping into the red light, holding his firearm steady. “The feds know. The police know. You can’t run a shadow syndicate from a prison cell.”
“Prison?” Vance laughed softly, turning to face Rowan. “Do you really think men like me go to prison? This server core holds the routing keys for 40% of the world’s cargo ships. With this data, Aegis controls the global supply chain. I don't need Mercer Global anymore, Rowan. I own the ocean.”
“Not without this,” a small voice echoed from the dark doorway behind Vance.
Vance snapped his head around.
Standing near the emergency exit was six-year-old Lily. She was trembling, wet from the rain, but her hands held a small, rusted iron key attached to a faded blue ribbon—the physical hardware key required to authorize the final data transfer.
She had slipped away from the security team in the parking bay to retrieve the one thing her mother had told her to keep safe.

“Lily! No! Get back!” Rowan shouted.
Vance’s eyes lit up with malicious realization. “The kid... she had it all along.” He gestured to his guard. “Get that key.”
