Chapter 7 - The Courthouse Showdown

The screech of tires echoed off the stone pillars of the county courthouse as I slammed my car into park. I threw open the back door, scooped a sleepy, confused Lily into my arms, and sprinted up the grand marble steps just as two sheriff cruisers screeched to a halt at the bottom, their sirens wailing.

"Stop right there! Drop your child and put your hands behind your back!" a deputy shouted, drawing his firearm.

"Don't shoot! I have an emergency custody injunction filed with Judge Harrison!" I screamed back, holding the court docket number high in the air with one hand while shielding Lily with my body.

Before the deputies could tackle me, heavy double doors burst open from inside. David stepped out onto the portico flanked by two court bailiffs.

"Hold your fire, Deputy! This man is under the direct protection of Judge Harrison's chambers. Step back!"

Within seconds, the chaotic scene shifted. The deputies lowered their weapons as David ushered us inside the brightly lit corridors of the courthouse, leading us straight into chambers where Judge Harrison—a stern, no-nonsense magistrate known for protecting children—was already reviewing the emergency file.

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the chamber opened again. Taylor and Evelyn strode in, escorted by their high-priced attorney, their faces flushed with righteous fury.

"Your Honor, this is an outrage!" Evelyn barked the moment she entered. "That man kidnapped my granddaughter and—”

"Quiet, Mrs. Vance," Judge Harrison interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. He slowly closed a thick manila folder on his desk and looked directly at Evelyn, then at Taylor.

"This court has just reviewed two pieces of evidence," Judge Harrison continued, sliding the flash drive David provided into a desktop viewer. On the courtroom screen, high-definition historical footage began to play—showing a young, terrified Taylor crying inside the exact same chest freezer decades ago, with a younger Evelyn slamming the lid shut.

Taylor went completely pale. Her knees buckled, and she grabbed onto the back of a wooden chair for support.

"Mom... where did you get that?" Taylor whispered, staring at the screen in utter horror.
