Chapter 4 - The Secret Ally

By afternoon, I knew I needed professional help, but legal representation cost money I no longer had. Desperate, I drove to a local diner on the edge of town to meet the one person Evelyn didn't know about: David, a retired family court investigator and an old college friend of my late father.

In a worn vinyl booth, I slid the photos of Lily’s bruised arms and the forensic close-ups of the freezer scratches across the table.

David’s face darkened as he examined the evidence. He adjusted his reading glasses, his jaw clenching. "Mark, this is criminal child endangerment. If this goes to trial, Evelyn could face felony charges, and Taylor could lose parental rights for failure to protect."

"How can I prove it, David? They locked the bank accounts, cut off my credit cards, and Evelyn has high-priced lawyers on speed dial. She's painting me as an unstable, aggressive father."

David leaned forward, lowering his voice. "Evelyn thinks she controls all the cards, but she made one critical mistake years ago. When she set up that trust fund for Taylor and the house, she used a loophole to dodge estate taxes. It’s technically illegal under federal financial disclosure laws. But more importantly..."

David pulled a small flash drive from his pocket and laid it beside my coffee cup.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Six months ago, a former housekeeper of Evelyn’s came to me. She quit because she couldn't stand the abuse. She managed to back up security camera footage from the mansion's older internal server—footage that Evelyn thought she permanently deleted. It shows Evelyn abusing Taylor when she was a child, locking her in that exact same freezer."

My blood ran cold. "It's generational abuse."

"Exactly," David said grimly. "Evelyn is passing down her sickness. But we need more than old footage. We need current evidence of immediate danger, and we need to secure Lily’s custody before they file their emergency restraining order against you."
