Chapter 2 - The Cold War in the House

That night, Lily was wrapped in three layers of heavy wool blankets, sipping warm honey-milk in our bed. Her temperature had stabilized, but the psychological shock lingered; she flinched at every creak of the floorboards.
Downstairs, the atmosphere in the living room was suffocating.
I stood by the kitchen island, slamming my car keys onto the marble surface. The metallic clatter echoed through the open-concept house. Evelyn was sitting on the sofa, calmly sipping chamomile tea as if nothing had happened. Taylor paced back and forth across the hardwood floor, her heels clicking sharply.
"You threatened my mother," Taylor snapped, pointing a manicured finger at me. "And you humiliated her in front of our daughter. Do you have any idea how much stress she’s under living with us?"
"She locked our six-year-old child in a sub-zero freezer because she asked for food, Taylor!" I shouted, finally letting the rage break through. "Are you out of your mind? You watched her do it! You stood right there in the driveway and didn't say a word!"
"I didn't see anything!" Taylor lied, though her voice wavered just a fraction. "And even if I did, you don't talk to my mother that way. This is her house, too—we live off the trust fund her late husband left, in case you forgot your place!"
That was the knife to the gut. For years, Taylor’s mother had held our financial stability over our heads. I had worked modest jobs, contributing what I could, while Evelyn orchestrated our household like a dictator. But tonight crossed a line that no amount of money could ever erase.
"Pack your things," I said quietly, the coldness in my voice chilling the room more than the freezer ever could.
Taylor stopped pacing. "What did you say?"

"You and your mother. Pack your bags. We are leaving. Or you can stay here with her, but Lily and I are walking out that door tonight."
Evelyn set her teacup down on the glass coffee table with a sharp click. She looked up at me with a sickeningly sweet, venomous smile. "You won't go anywhere, Mark. Because without us, you have nothing. And legally? Good luck trying to get custody of Lily when I own the best family lawyers in this state."
