Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Returning to the house felt like walking into a lion’s den. As soon as I unlocked the front door, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Taylor was sitting at the kitchen island, talking in hushed tones on her phone, while Evelyn supervised Lily, who was sitting quietly at the dining table coloring a picture book.

"Mark, where have you been?" Taylor hissed, hanging up her phone abruptly. "Mom and I have been discussing your behavior. We are willing to give you one chance: sign these voluntary separation papers, relinquish primary custody of Lily, and we will let you keep your old car and give you a severance check of ten thousand dollars."

I looked at the paperwork spread across the counter. It was a complete surrender.

"And if I refuse?" I asked calmly.

"Then we call the police right now," Evelyn chimed in, walking out from the hallway with her phone already raised. "We will report that you pushed me down the stairs yesterday and threatened us both. With my word against yours, and our financial backing, who do you think the judge will believe?"

They thought they had me cornered. They thought desperation would make me sign away my flesh and blood.

I walked over to the dining table, knelt beside Lily, and gently touched her shoulder. "Hey, sweetie. Do you want to go on a fun camping trip with Daddy tonight?"

Lily’s eyes lit up, a small smile breaking through her pale face. "Really, Daddy? Just the two of us?"

"Just the two of us," I said, looking up at Taylor and Evelyn. I picked up a pen, hovered it over the signature line of the legal document, and then—with a slow, deliberate motion—tore the papers straight down the middle.

"Keep your money," I said, standing up. "And keep your lies. Because our time here is officially up."
