Chapter 3 - Gathering Shadows

The following morning, the house was deafeningly quiet. Lily was still asleep, exhausted from the trauma. I spent the early hours quietly packing her clothes, my important documents, and our birth certificates into two duffel bags.
When I opened my laptop in the home office to check our joint bank account, a cold sweat broke out across my forehead.
Access Denied.
I refreshed the page. My login credentials were invalid. I picked up my phone and opened the banking app—the balance had plummeted from thousands of dollars to zero. Every penny of savings, accumulated over years of hard work, had been transferred out of the joint account at 3:17 AM.
The door to the study clicked open. Evelyn stood in the doorway, wearing a silk bathrobe, her posture rigid and triumphant.
"Looking for something, Mark?" she asked smoothly.
"You locked the accounts," I said, rising slowly from my chair.
"I protected my assets," Evelyn corrected, stepping closer. "Taylor and I consulted our family attorney first thing this morning. You are legally locked out of everything. If you walk out of this house today, you will leave with the clothes on your back and nothing else. And if you try to take Lily, I will report you for kidnapping and abuse. I have security footage of you screaming at me in the garage last night, looking unhinged."
I stared at her, realizing the depth of her malice. She wasn't just a cruel old woman; she was a master manipulator who had planned this safety net long ago.

"You think you've won," I whispered.
"I know I have," Evelyn replied, turning on her heel. "Now, go make breakfast for my granddaughter. And remember your place."
