Chapter 4 - The Shadows of Greed

The Vance Estate in Upstate New York was a grand, sunlit sanctuary surrounded by pine forests and quiet lakes. For Leo and Mia, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. For the first time in their lives, they had a backyard to run in, warm food prepared for them, and soft beds to sleep in.

Over the next two weeks, the wall between Clara and Julian began to crumble.

Clara learned that beneath Julian’s cold, formidable exterior was a deeply lonely man who spent his nights working because he had no family to come home to. In turn, Julian was captivated by Clara’s grace, fierce dignity, and unconditional devotion to her children.

They spent evenings together on the porch, watching the twins play catch with Julian’s golden retriever, sharing stories of their pasts. A quiet, profound connection began to spark between them—a warmth neither had ever known.

However, greed has a way of tracking down happiness.

One evening, a black sedan sped up the estate driveway. A man dressed in an expensive, disheveled suit stepped out, reeking of alcohol.

It was Richard Sterling—the wealthy husband of Mrs. Sterling from the school courtyard, and a major shareholder in Vance Enterprises.

"Julian!" Richard shouted drunkenly, waving a stack of legal documents as Julian walked out onto the front porch, placing himself between Richard and the house where Clara and the kids were resting.

"What are you doing on my property, Richard?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with cold authority.

"You've lost your mind, Vance!" Richard sneered, staggering forward. "The board is in chaos! The news is calling you an unstable eccentric for playing daddy to a waitress's bastards! The stock price dropped three percent this morning!"

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Watch your mouth, Richard."

"I brought the board's ultimatum!" Richard yelled, tossing the papers at Julian’s feet. "Sign over your voting rights to the board until this scandal clears, or we kick you out of your own company! Send that poor girl and her bratty kids back to the gutter where they belong!"

Before Julian could answer, Leo stepped out from behind the front door, holding a wooden baseball bat Julian had given him the day before.

"Don't talk about my mom like that!" Leo yelled, his small body shaking with anger.

Richard laughed cruelly, stepping toward the young boy. "Get out of my way, you little leech!"

In a fraction of a second, Julian moved like a striking panther. He grabbed Richard by the collar, slamming him hard against the side of the sedan, his hand gripping the man's throat with terrifying force.

"If you ever speak to my son like that again, Richard," Julian growled into his ear, his voice low and lethal, "I won't just ruin your shares. I will destroy every company, every asset, and every dollar tied to your name. Get off my land before I make good on that promise."

Julian shoved him away. Terrified, Richard scrambled back into his car and sped down the driveway into the night.
