Chapter 1 - The Whispers in the Courtyard

The morning sun over Saint Jude’s Academy bathed the manicured lawns in a warm golden light, but inside the crowded courtyard, the air was thick with stunned silence. Parents in tailored coats, teachers holding attendance clipboards, and children clutching expensive leather backpacks all froze, staring at the middle of the brick walkway.
Nine-year-old twins, Leo and Mia, stood side by side in faded, patched hand-me-down uniforms. Mia’s tiny hand gripped a crumpled, hand-drawn paper tie, while Leo held a small cardboard trophy painted in gold glitter that read: Best Dad in the World.
In front of them stood Julian Vance—twenty-eight-year-old tech billionaire, head of Vance Enterprises, and the most notorious bachelor in New York. Dressed in a dark custom suit, his cold blue eyes usually held the sharp, unyielding glare of a man who commanded boardrooms without hesitation.
Yet at that moment, Julian was completely motionless.
"Excuse me?" Julian’s deep voice shattered the silence, catching in his throat.
Mia swallowed hard, her big brown eyes shining with unshed tears. "It’s Father’s Day Showcase at school today, Mr. Vance," she whispered, her small voice carrying across the quiet crowd. "Everyone has a dad to show their drawings to. Our mom works three jobs, and our dad left before we were born. We watched your video on the news... the one where you said you grew up in an orphanage and never had a dad either."
Leo stepped forward, holding up the glittery cardboard trophy. "We saved our lunch money for two weeks to buy the gold glitter, sir. We don't want your money or your cars. We just wanted to know what it feels like to have a dad walk into the classroom with us... just for one hour."
Gasps rippled through the gathered parents. Snickers whispered from a group of wealthy mothers near the fountain.
"How embarrassing," whispered Mrs. Sterling, the mother of the school’s wealthiest student. "Street children trying to trap a billionaire. Someone call security."
Julian’s eyes snapped toward Mrs. Sterling, a flash of pure, dangerous ice in his gaze that instantly silenced her. Then, slowly, the man who had built an empire out of logic and steel crouched down on one knee in the dirt, completely unbothered by his custom trousers pressing against the gravel.
He looked closely at the twins. He saw the scuffed toes of their shoes, the brave tilt of Leo’s chin, and the desperate hope in Mia’s trembling smile. In their eyes, Julian saw a ghost—his own childhood, standing alone in cold foster home hallways, waiting for someone to pick him who never came.
Gently, Julian reached out and took the crumpled paper tie from Mia and the cardboard trophy from Leo.
"Your trophy is missing one detail," Julian said softly, his voice remarkably gentle.
"What detail?" Leo asked, holding his breath.

Julian carefully unbuttoned the top collar of his shirt, took off his five-thousand-dollar silk necktie, tossed it onto the ground, and pinned the crumpled paper tie around his neck instead.
"It didn't have my name on it yet," Julian said, looking them straight in the eyes. "I’m not taking this position for an hour, kids. If you’re asking me to be your dad... my answer is yes. Today, tomorrow, and for every Father's Day after."
