Chapter 3 - The Meeting of Two Worlds

Twenty minutes later, Julian’s armored SUV pulled up to the back door of a modest diner in downtown Manhattan.

Inside, twenty-seven-year-old Clara Miller stood in her stain-covered waitress apron, her hands shaking as she tried to understand why news cameras were pressed against the glass windows of the restaurant.

When the front door opened, Julian Vance stepped inside, flanked by two security guards who quietly barred the reporters from entering. Behind Julian, Leo and Mia came running through the diner.

"Mommy!" Mia squealed, throwing her arms around Clara’s waist.

"Mia! Leo! Oh thank God!" Clara dropped to her knees, hugging her children tightly, her eyes wide with fear and confusion. She looked up at Julian, taking in his sharp suit, his commanding height, and the paper tie hanging around his neck.

"Who are you?" Clara demanded defensively, pulling her kids behind her. "What is going on? What did you do to my children?"

"Ms. Miller, please calm down," Julian said, holding his hands up in a gesture of peace. "My name is Julian Vance. Your children came to my school event today."

"Your school event?" Clara’s voice cracked with stress and exhaustion. "My children are on scholarship! I work sixteen hours a day so they can go to a good school, and now there are cameras following me! Did they do something wrong?"

"No, Ms. Miller," Julian said softly, his voice carrying a deep sincerity that took Clara off guard. "They did nothing wrong. They showed more courage than any adult I’ve met in years. They asked me to be their father for the day."

Clara froze. She looked at the paper tie pinned to the billionaire's chest, then down at Leo, who was holding Julian’s hand.

"Julian Vance..." Clara murmured as reality set in. "The tech CEO? Sir, my kids are nine years old. They don't understand how the world works. They see a rich man on TV and think... please, just leave us alone. We don't need charity."

"This isn't charity, Clara," Julian replied firmly. "This is a responsibility I accepted the moment your son put this trophy in my hand. Your children are targets for the media right now because of my name. Let me protect you. Come to my estate until the media storm clears."

Clara looked at her tired, sweet children, then out at the predatory flash of news cameras outside. Realizing she had no other choice to keep her children safe, she slowly nodded.

"Fine," Clara whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "But just until the cameras go away."
