Chapter 8 – The Ambush at St. Jude's
The fragile peace was tested three months later on a crisp, snow-dusted morning in Manhattan.
The foundation was celebrating the opening of its flagship pediatric allergy wing at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. The event was packed with doctors, city officials, journalists, and grateful families. Sarah, looking polished and radiant in a tailored charcoal suit, was speaking warmly with a group of pediatric specialists near the entrance.
Alejandro stood near the back of the bright, marble-tiled lobby, observing the crowd with a practiced eye. Emma sat on a plush bench nearby, quietly coloring in her sketchbook while guarded by two undercover security men.
Suddenly, the heavy glass entrance doors burst open.
Three men in dark coats rushed in, guns drawn. They were Valenti’s soldiers, sent not to kill, but to create chaos, fire shots into the ceiling, and humiliate Alejandro in front of the city press—a desperate ploy to prove that the great Alejandro Moretti could no longer keep order in his own backyard.
Screams echoed through the tall lobby as people ducked behind pillars and chairs. Panic surged through the crowd.
Inside the nearby private lounge, Sarah gasped, reaching out frantically for Emma. But before the gunmen could even advance three steps into the room, the atmosphere shifted completely.
Alejandro didn't flinch. The dormant predator within him awoke in a fraction of a second. With frightening efficiency, he signaled Bruno and his team.
"Keep her behind you," Alejandro ordered Sarah in a calm, steel-hard voice, stepping directly between his family and the threshold of the lounge.
What followed was not a messy shootout, but a masterclass in tactical suppression. Bruno and three guards moved with silent, lethal precision. Before the lead gunman could rack his weapon to fire a second warning shot into the air, Bruno closed the distance, disarming him with a bone-crushing twist of the wrist. The second gunman was tackled to the polished floor by two Moretti operatives, his weapon sliding harmlessly across the marble.
The third attacker panicked, turning his gun toward the lounge—toward Sarah and Emma.
In a flash, Alejandro closed the gap. He grabbed the man’s wrist, twisting it upward until a sharp crack echoed through the lobby. The gun clattered to the floor. Alejandro slammed the attacker face-first onto a marble pillar, holding him pinned with a single, massive hand pressed against the back of his neck.
The entire incident took less than forty seconds. The lobby fell into a stunned, terrifying silence, broken only by the heavy breathing of the captured men.
Alejandro leaned down, his face inches from the terrified gunman's ear. His voice dropped to a low, icy whisper that vibrated with absolute menace.
"Go back to Domenico Valenti," Alejandro said softly. "Tell him that if he ever brings violence to a place meant for sick children again—if he ever so much as breathes in the direction of my family—I will not just take his territory. I will dismantle everything he has built, brick by brick, until his name is erased from this city. Do you understand me?"
The man nodded frantically, pale as a sheet.
When the NYPD arrived minutes later, Alejandro calmly handed the men over to the authorities, treating the incident as nothing more than an unfortunate security breach.
Once the lobby was cleared, Alejandro walked into the private lounge. His heart was pounding, not from fear, but from the sudden surge of adrenaline. He looked down at his hands—hands that had returned to violence in a heartbeat. He felt a sudden, sharp pang of guilt.
He felt a soft tug at his jacket.
He looked down. Emma was standing beside him. She wasn't crying, and her eyes weren't filled with fear. She reached up and wrapped her small fingers around his hand.

"You kept everyone safe, Uncle Alejandro," she whispered softly, looking up at him with unshakeable trust. "Just like the golden rabbit in my picture."
Alejandro knelt down, pulling the little girl into a tight embrace. The darkness that had briefly threatened to consume him melted away under the warmth of her small arms.
