Chapter 2 - The Silent Surveillance

The room went so quiet that the crackle of the hearth fire sounded like gunshots.

Alejandro held the tiny black lens between his thumb and index finger. A faint, red micro-LED pulsed once every five seconds, signaling an active, encrypted data uplink.

Someone hadn't just tried to poison him. Someone was watching him die in real-time.

"Boss..." Bruno said, stepping back into the room, his phone still in his hand. "Dr. Vance is on his way. He'll be here in ten—" Bruno froze when he saw the device in Alejandro’s hand. "What is that?"

"A camera," Alejandro said softly. His voice was unnervingly calm, the kind of calm that preceded an absolute bloodbath. "A hidden camera in my private study, Bruno. The study that you personally sweep for electronic bugs every Monday morning."

Bruno swallowed hard, his posture stiffening. "Boss, I swear to you on my mother's grave, I swept this room three days ago! My counter-surveillance gear didn't pick up a signal! It must be running on a localized, frequency-hopping band—"

"Or," Alejandro cut in, stepping toward his chief of security, "the person sweeping the room was the person who put it there."

The two armed guards near the door immediately shifted their weight, their hands resting nervously near their holstered sidearms. The tension in the study spiked to a suffocating level.

"Alejandro, you've known me for fifteen years!" Bruno pleaded, his eyes wide with desperate sincerity. "I took a bullet for you in Miami! I built your security detail from the ground up! I would never lay a hand on you or let anyone else touch your cellar!"

Emma, sensing the sudden shift in energy, hid her face in her mother’s neck. Sarah pulled her daughter tighter, backing slowly toward the doorway.

Alejandro noticed the child's distress and instantly reined in his lethal aura. He looked down at the tiny device in his hand, then at Bruno.

"Take Sarah and Emma upstairs to the third-floor suite," Alejandro commanded the two guards at the door. "Double the perimeter security. No one enters or leaves this estate without my personal code. Not my captains, not my lawyers, not my family."

"Yes, Boss," the guards responded instantly.

Sarah picked up Emma and her pink rabbit backpack, looking back at Alejandro with worry. "Mr. Moretti... please be careful."

"Go, Sarah. You're safe here," Alejandro assured her.

Once the door closed, leaving only Alejandro and Bruno in the room, Alejandro walked over to a small, heavy safe hidden behind an oil painting of the Sicilian coastline. He punched in an eight-digit code and pulled out a sleek, military-grade signal analyzer.

He attached the pinhole camera to the analyzer’s diagnostic port.

The screen lit up with lines of green code, deciphering the camera’s hardwired serial number and its target IP transmission address.

"This camera wasn't transmitting outside the house, Bruno," Alejandro said, staring at the glowing monitor. "The signal is too short-range. It’s transmitting to a local receiver located right here on the estate grounds. Within a three-hundred-foot radius."

Bruno took a breath, trying to regain his composure. "That means... the traitor is inside the house right now. Watching the feed."

"Watching a black screen," Alejandro corrected, pointing to the broken glass on the floor. "Because when Emma used that EpiPen, she knocked my desk lamp over, which pulled the power cord for the local transmitter out of the wall socket."

Alejandro turned to Bruno, his eyes burning with a cold, calculated fire.

"The killer thinks I'm dead," Alejandro whispered. "They're sitting somewhere in this house right now, waiting for the guards to discover my body so they can initiate the takeover protocol."

"Who has access to the cellar Barolo, Boss?" Bruno asked, pulling his own weapon and checking the magazine. "Only four people carry the master keys to the wine vault: you, me, your cousin Marco, and chief accountant Victor Rossi."

Alejandro didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the desk and picked up his private leather ledger—the one containing the names of his global informants, offshore accounts, and the syndicate’s succession trust.

"Marco called me two hours ago," Alejandro mused quietly. "He insisted on coming over tonight to discuss the port distribution expansion. And Victor asked for an advance on his quarterly commission yesterday morning."

Suddenly, the screen on the diagnostic analyzer beeped twice.

The camera's internal micro-SD card had been decrypted by the analyzer software. A list of recorded video files appeared on the screen, spanning the last three weeks.

Alejandro clicked on the most recent file—timestamped at 4:15 PM today, just twenty-two minutes ago.

The video played in high clarity.

The screen showed Alejandro’s empty study. The heavy oak door creaked open. A figure in a black tailored suit walked into the room, wearing thin leather gloves. The figure walked directly to the crystal decanter on the side table, pulled a small glass vial from his pocket, and poured three drops of a clear, viscous liquid into the Barolo wine.

Then, the figure turned toward the camera to check if the red light was operational.

The firelight hit the man's face perfectly.

Bruno gasped, taking a step back in pure shock. "No... it can't be."

Alejandro stared at the screen, his expression turning to stone.

The man in the video wasn't Marco. It wasn't Victor.

It was Dr. Julian Vance—Alejandro’s trusted personal physician, the man who had treated his family for twenty years, the man who knew every detail of Alejandro’s severe peanut allergy, and the man Bruno had just called to 'treat' Alejandro.

"He didn't just poison you," Bruno realized, his blood running cold. "He offered to come back here right now so he could finish the job if the poison failed!"

Outside the house, the sound of tires crunching on the wet driveway signaled the arrival of a vehicle.

Alejandro closed the analyzer, slipping the tiny camera into his pocket. He picked up his heavy custom Kimber .45 pistol from the desk drawer, racked the slide with a smooth, deadly click, and looked at Bruno.

"Dr. Vance just arrived," Alejandro said coldly. "Let us go welcome my doctor."
