Chapter 4 - The Fortress on the Third Floor

While Alejandro and Bruno prepared their counter-strike, Sarah Carter sat on the edge of a massive velvet sofa in the grand master suite on the third floor.

The room was larger than her entire home back in Brooklyn. Crystal chandeliers hung from the carved ceiling, and giant bay windows looked over the sprawling estate grounds. But Sarah couldn't appreciate the luxury. She was terrified.

Emma was sitting on a soft sheepskin rug in the center of the room, playing happily with Barnaby the rabbit. She seemed completely unfazed by the armed guards standing outside the reinforced door, or the fact that she had just saved the most dangerous man in the city.

"Emma, baby," Sarah whispered, kneeling beside her daughter and taking her tiny hands. "Are you okay? Does your leg hurt where you used the medicine?"

"No, Mommy," Emma smiled, making her rabbit hop over a velvet pillow. "Barnaby says Mr. Moretti was nice. His hands were big and warm."

Sarah closed her eyes, trying to stop her hands from shaking. She had worked as a maid for the Moretti family for eight months. She had always kept her head down, cleaned the marble, washed the linens, and tried to remain invisible. Everyone knew that crossing Alejandro Moretti meant disappearing without a trace.

And now, her four-year-old daughter was right in the middle of a mafia war.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Sarah gasped, jumping up instinctively, placing herself between the door and Emma.

The door unlocked with a heavy electronic click, and Alejandro Moretti walked into the room.

He was wearing a fresh dark suit, his hair neatly combed back. The murderous rage that had filled his eyes in the study was entirely gone, replaced by a calm, protective warmth as his eyes landed on Emma.

"Mr. Moretti," Sarah breathed out, holding her breath.

"Sarah," Alejandro said, walking into the room and closing the door behind him. "I came to make sure you and the little one have everything you need."

He stepped over to Emma, kneeling down on the rug beside her. The ruthless syndicate leader looked absurdly large sitting on the floor with a toddler, but his movements were remarkably gentle.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box tied with a gold ribbon.

"For you, Emma," Alejandro said softly, handing her the box.

Emma’s eyes lit up. She pulled the ribbon and opened the box. Inside lay a exquisite, custom-crafted gold pendant shaped like a little rabbit with a tiny diamond for an eye. On the back, engraved in delicate script, were the words: To my guardian angel.

"It's shiny!" Emma gasped, running her small thumb over the gold surface. "Mommy, look!"

Sarah stared at the necklace, recognizing instantly that the diamond alone was worth more than five years of her salary. "Mr. Moretti... this is too much. We can't accept this—"

"It is nothing compared to what she gave me," Alejandro said firmly, standing up and looking at Sarah. "Sarah, I know you are frightened. You saw things today that no civilized person should ever see."

"I... I just want my daughter to be safe," Sarah whispered, tears forming in her eyes. "We don't have anywhere else to go. Her father left us before she was born, and her medical bills for her allergies take everything I earn..."

Alejandro’s dark eyes filled with a fierce, absolute resolve.

"Listen to me very carefully, Sarah," Alejandro said, his voice ringing with absolute truth. "From this day forward, you will never worry about medical bills again. You will never worry about rent, about safety, or about your daughter’s future. Emma is under the protection of the Moretti name. Anyone who touches a hair on her head will answer to me."

He stepped closer to Sarah, pulling a sealed document from his coat envelope.

"This is a deed to a house in the private gated community in upstate New York," Alejandro explained, placing it in her hands. "It includes a full trust fund in Emma’s name, guaranteeing her education through university, and a permanent security detail. You don't have to clean houses anymore, Sarah."

Sarah stared at the deed, her mouth open in shock. "Why... why are you doing all this for us?"

Alejandro looked down at Emma, who was happily trying to wear the gold necklace around her rabbit's neck.

"Three years ago, I lost my daughter, Kiara," Alejandro said softly, a painful memory haunting his deep voice. "I couldn't save her. I sat in a hospital waiting room while the world ended around me. Today, God gave me a second chance through your daughter's courage. I don't believe in accidents, Sarah."

Suddenly, the house’s internal comm system chimed twice. Bruno’s voice came through the speaker in Alejandro’s ear piece:

"Boss. Marco’s motorcade just pulled through the front gates. He brought six armed SUVs. He thinks he’s coming to collect your body."

Alejandro touched his ear piece. "Keep Sarah and Emma locked in the master vault. Do not let anyone up to the third floor until I give the word."

He looked back at Emma one last time, giving her a quiet, proud nod.

"Stay here with Mommy, little angel," Alejandro said. "I have to go take care of some trash."
