Chapter 7 – Shadows of the Past

Two years had passed since the Kiara & Emma Foundation officially opened its doors to the public. In that time, the Moretti estate in upstate New York had underwent a profound transformation. The cold, suffocating silence that once filled its grand hallways had been replaced by the rhythm of a real home—the smell of fresh baking from the kitchen, the soft rustle of garden leaves, and the vibrant, irrepressible laughter of seven-year-old Emma.
Yet, in the world Alejandro Moretti inhabited, light always cast a long, dangerous shadow.
Late on an October evening, while rain lashed against the tall stained-glass windows of his private study, Alejandro sat behind his heavy oak desk, staring down at a thick folder. The dim glow of the desk lamp carved sharp angles into his hardened face. Across from him stood Bruno, holding a glass of amber whiskey he hadn't touched.
"The Valenti family is making moves on the Brooklyn docks again, Boss," Bruno said softly, his voice heavy with caution. "Domenico Valenti has been gathering the old bosses—the ones who still remember how your father ruled. They’re calling you soft. They think your millions going into children's hospitals means the Moretti family has lost its claws."
Alejandro slowly closed the folder. Years ago, a report like this would have triggered an immediate, brutal response. A single order from him would have turned the docks into a graveyard before sunrise. But as he looked up at Bruno, his dark eyes were not filled with wild rage, but with a cold, calculated calm.
"Let them talk, Bruno," Alejandro said quietly. "A barking dog only proves it’s afraid of the fence. Domenico is testing the perimeter because he sees me building hospitals instead of buying weapons. He doesn't understand that protecting a child requires far more strength than taking a man's life."
"They're pushing hard, Boss," Bruno urged gently. "If we don't respond, others might think we're vulnerable."
"Increase the guards on Sarah and Emma," Alejandro commanded, his tone dropping to an absolute, unyielding pitch. "Double the tactical team following their cars. Strengthen our perimeter here. But we do not strike first. I spent thirty years building an empire on fear and blood, Bruno. I will not tear down the peace in this house just to satisfy the pride of dying old men."
Before Bruno could reply, the heavy wooden door of the study creaked open. A small figure stood in the warm light of the hallway. Emma, dressed in her oversized flannel pajamas, was clutching Barnaby the stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest. Her big brown eyes looked nervously around the shadow-filled room.
"Uncle Alejandro?" she murmured, rubbing her sleepy eyes with the back of her small hand. "The thunder woke me up. It sounded like big drums."
The icy atmosphere in the room evaporated instantly. Alejandro’s posture softened as he set his papers aside. He extended a hand toward her. "Come here, little bunny."
Emma ran across the thick Turkish rug, ignoring Bruno with the familiarity of a child who knew she was safe, and scrambled onto Alejandro’s lap. She buried her face into the crook of his neck, her tiny hands clutching his linen shirt.

Alejandro wrapped his large, protective arm around her, resting his chin gently on her head. He looked over her shoulder at Bruno, giving a sharp, subtle nod.
Bruno understood perfectly. The Moretti empire had not grown weak—it had simply found something truly priceless to protect.
