Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gates

Downstairs in the grand courtyard, the heavy iron gates closed behind a fleet of six black SUVs.
The rain slammed down against the asphalt as over twenty heavily armed men in dark tactical gear stepped out of the vehicles, locking and loading automatic weapons.
At the front of the convoy stood Marco Moretti.
Marco was forty-five years old, sharp-featured, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat and a smug, victorious smile. He held a cigar between his fingers, taking a slow puff despite the pouring rain.
"Spread out!" Marco ordered his men in a harsh Sicilian dialect. "Secure the perimeter! If any of Alejandro’s loyal guards raise a weapon, cut them down! Today, the family gets new leadership!"
Marco walked up the grand stone steps of the estate mansion, flanked by his four top lieutenants. He shoved the front doors open, stepping into the dimly lit, silent foyer.
The house was eerily quiet. No guards were visible. The crystal chandeliers were dimmed, casting long, menacing shadows across the marble floor.
"Dr. Vance!" Marco called out, his voice echoing off the high walls. "Julian! Is it done?!"
No answer came from the darkness.
Marco’s smile faded slightly. He gestured to his lieutenants, who immediately raised their silenced pistols, moving forward in a tactical sweep.
"Vance, you coward, answer me!" Marco barked, stepping deeper into the foyer.
Suddenly, the massive double oak doors behind them slammed shut with a deafening BOOM. Heavy steel security shutters dropped over every window in the foyer, locking the room down like an iron vault.
The bright overhead floodlights flashed on, blinding Marco and his men with searing light.
From the top of the grand marble staircase, a solitary figure walked out of the shadows.
He was dressed in a pristine black suit, holding a silver-plated .45 pistol at his side.
Marco’s heart stopped. His cigar fell from his lips, landing on the marble floor.
"A-Alejandro...?" Marco gasped, taking a step backward, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated terror. "You... you're dead! Vance said—"
"Vance is currently resting in my basement, Marco," Alejandro said smoothly, his voice echoing from above like thunder. "He was a very poor doctor. He didn't realize that a four-year-old girl with a rabbit backpack is stronger than all your money."
"Shoot him!" Marco screamed in panic, pointing frantically at the staircase. "Kill him now!"
Before Marco’s lieutenants could even raise their weapons, hidden panels in the foyer walls slid open.
Over a dozen of Alejandro’s most elite, heavily armored guards emerged with raised weapons, laser sights dotting the chests of Marco’s men with lethal precision. Bruno stood at the front, holding a heavy shotgun pointed directly at Marco’s head.
"Drop your weapons!" Bruno roared. "Drop them now or we paint the walls with you!"
The lieutenants looked at the red laser dots covering their bodies, then at the invincible man standing at the top of the stairs, and realized instantly that they had walked straight into a kill box.
One by one, Marco’s men dropped their guns onto the marble floor, raising their hands in absolute surrender.
Marco stood alone in the center of the room, trembling uncontrollably, his face completely drained of color.
Alejandro walked slowly down the marble stairs, his leather shoes making sharp, rhythmic clicks against the stone. He didn't look angry. He looked disappointed—the kind of cold, absolute disappointment that was far more dangerous than rage.
He stopped two feet in front of his cousin.
"Why, Marco?" Alejandro asked quietly. "I gave you territories. I gave you wealth. I treated you like my own brother after my uncle died."
"You... you were weak, Alejandro!" Marco spat, trying to gather his remaining pride despite his shaking knees. "Ever since Kiara died, you lost your edge! You spent more time donating to children's hospitals than protecting our borders! The other families were laughing at us! We needed a real leader!"
Alejandro looked at Marco for a long, quiet moment. Then, he reached into his jacket, pulled out the tiny, empty plastic EpiPen that Emma had used, and held it up between his fingers.
"You think compassion is weakness, Marco?" Alejandro whispered softly. "This little piece of plastic saved my life today. Not guns. Not armored SUVs. Not traitorous doctors. A child’s kindness saved this empire."
Alejandro leaned closer, his eyes burning with absolute authority.
"And that kindness proved to me that this family is still worth fighting for."
Alejandro nodded once to Bruno.

"Take him away," Alejandro ordered coldly. "Strip his assets. Exile him to the old farm in Calabria under twenty-four-hour guard. He will spend the rest of his life pulling weeds from the dirt, remembering the empire he tried to steal."
"No! Alejandro! Please! You can't do this to blood!" Marco screamed as Bruno and two guards grabbed his arms, dragging him out through the rear exit, his desperate cries fading into the rain.
