Chapter 7 - THE TIPPING POINT

The subterranean air felt heavy and suffocating. Dominic Falcone held the detonator tightly in his hand, his thumb resting lightly on the red arming switch.

"Lower your guns," Falcone ordered, his eyes gleaming with unhinged desperation. "Or I press this button right now, and fifty pounds of C4 will collapse three floors of concrete down onto our heads."

Lorenzo did not lower his gun. Instead, he stepped in front of me, his posture completely rigid, his expression an unreadable mask of stone.

"You're blustering, Dominic," Lorenzo said coolly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You're a greedy coward. You won't kill yourself just to eliminate us."

"You pushed me to the edge, Moretti!" Falcone screamed, his sanity clearly slipping. "Your little waitress exposed my offshore accounts! The Five Families have put a hit out on me! I have nothing left to lose!"

"You're right about one thing," I spoke up, stepping out from behind Lorenzo’s shoulder, keeping my eyes fixed on Falcone. "You have nothing left. But my father... my father died with his honor intact. You are going to die as a pathetic thief who ran out of places to hide."

Falcone’s face flushed with pure, blinding fury. "You arrogant little brat!"

That split second of rage was the mistake Lorenzo was waiting for.

Before Falcone could press the thumb switch, Lorenzo raised his weapon and fired a single, blindingly fast shot. The bullet hit Falcone directly in the right wrist, severing the nerve and forcing his hand open. The detonator tumbled through the air.

I lunged forward, sliding across the damp concrete floor, catching the detonator before it hit the ground, instantly flipping the safety switch to disarm the charge.

Falcone screamed in pain, clutching his shattered wrist, while his lieutenant tried to draw his weapon. Lorenzo swept forward with brutal efficiency, disarming the lieutenant with a powerful kick, striking him across the jaw, and slamming Falcone against the concrete wall.

Within seconds, the heavy footsteps of Matteo and a dozen Moretti tactical guards echoed down the tunnel. They flooded the space, securing Falcone and his remaining men in heavy plastic restraints.

"The mansion is secure, Boss," Matteo reported, breathing heavily. "The mercenaries upstairs have surrendered."

Lorenzo didn't answer right away. He turned to me, his breath coming in deep, heavy chest rises. He walked over, knelt beside me on the floor, and took the disarmed detonator from my hands, tossing it aside.

He wrapped his warm, strong arms around me, pulling me tight against his chest. I buried my face in his neck, shaking as the adrenaline finally washed out of my system.

"You were incredible," Lorenzo whispered into my hair, his voice trembling with rare, uncharacteristic emotion. "You saved us both, Clara."

"We saved each other," I whispered back, tightening my grip on his shirt.

Dominic Falcone was dragged away in chains, cursing and screaming as federal agents—who had been notified by Lorenzo's legal team using my decrypted ledgers—arrived at the scene to take custody of the fallen crime boss.

The reign of terror that had destroyed my family fifteen years ago was finally, permanently over.
