Chapter 5 - SILENT SECRETS AND SPARKS

The night rain fell heavily over Manhattan, smearing the city lights into brilliant streaks of gold and red against the wet pavement.

Following the explosive confrontation at the Metropolitan Club, Lorenzo moved me into his private estate—a heavily guarded, historic limestone mansion in the Upper East Side. Security teams patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day, ensuring that Falcone’s men couldn't get within two blocks of us.

It was midnight. I sat at the grand dining table in the mansion’s library, surrounded by stacks of financial ledgers, tax documents, and property deeds. Despite the luxury surrounding me, my mind was restless.

The library door creaked open, and Lorenzo stepped in. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows. He looked relaxed, vulnerable, and dangerously handsome.

"You should be sleeping, Clara," he said gently, placing a glass of warm milk and honey on the table beside my laptop.

"I can't," I admitted, rubbing my tired eyes. "Every time I close my eyes, I see Falcone’s gun. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop."

Lorenzo walked over, resting his hands on the back of my chair. "You don't have to fear him anymore. I give you my word, no one will ever harm you while I draw breath."

I turned in my chair to face him. "Why are you doing all of this for me, Lorenzo? Yes, I helped your mother, but you’ve put your entire empire on the line to protect me. Why?"

Lorenzo stared down at me for a long, heavy moment. The silence between us grew dense, electric with an unspoken emotion that had been building since the night we met in the ballroom.

"When I was twenty-two," Lorenzo said quietly, his gaze softening, "my father was assassinated by rival syndicates. I was thrown into this world of violence and paranoia, surrounded by people who only wanted power, money, or favor. For fifteen years, I have lived in a world where everyone has a price and every smile is fake."

He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the side of my face, tracing the delicate line of my jawline. I gasped softly at the electric charge of his skin.

"Then you appeared," he continued softly. "A waitress in glued shoes with thirty dollars in her pocket, standing up to one of the most powerful families in the city just to protect an old woman she didn't know. You have a pure, untamed light inside you, Clara. In my dark world, that light is the only thing that matters."

My heart pounded violently against my ribs. I stood up slowly, looking into his dark, intense eyes. "Lorenzo..."

"I tried to convince myself this was just business," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic whisper. "I tried to tell myself I was just clearing your father's name. But I was lying to myself."

He leaned in, his lips gently brushing against mine in a soft, questioning kiss that sent an intoxicating warmth rushing through my entire body. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the overwhelming desire that burned between us.

The kiss deepened, becoming passionate and possessive, a silent vow that bound our souls together in the midst of the storm surrounding us.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his dark eyes burned with fierce determination. "I will burn down the city before I let anyone take you from me, Clara."

Before I could answer, a loud explosion rocked the foundation of the mansion, shattering the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the library.
