Chapter 4 - THE METROPOLITAN TRIAL

The Metropolitan Club was a fortress of old money and dark secrets. Heavy velvet curtains blocked out the daylight, and the scent of expensive cigars and cognac filled the air of the grand conference room.
Around a massive mahogany table sat the heads of the most powerful families in the city. At the far end sat Dominic Falcone—a cruel, heavy-set man with silver hair, cold grey eyes, and a reputation for absolute ruthless violence. He was the man who had ordered my father's death.
When the heavy doors swung open, Lorenzo walked in first, radiating absolute authority. I walked beside him, dressed in an immaculate ivory trouser suit, my head held high, my heart pounding like a drum against my ribs.
A wave of shocked mutters broke out across the table. Dominic Falcone’s face twisted into an expression of pure rage the moment he recognized my face.
"What is the meaning of this, Moretti?!" Falcone bellowed, slamming his fist onto the table. "You dare bring the daughter of a rat into a high-level council meeting?!"
"Watch your tongue, Dominic," Lorenzo said smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table and motioning for me to sit beside him. "Clara Bennett is the Chief Financial Officer of Moretti Holdings. Any insult directed at her is an insult directed at my family."
"She is Arthur Bennett's blood!" Falcone spat, leaning forward. "Her father tried to ruin my family with federal subpoenas! She belongs in a shallow grave, not at this table!"
"Her father was murdered in his cell because he found out you were stealing from your own partners, Dominic," I spoke up, my voice ringing clear and steady across the silent room.
Falcone glared at me with pure venom. "Shut your mouth, girl! You have no standing here!"
"She has every standing," Lorenzo declared, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly calm register that instantly silenced the entire room. He pulled a thick folder from his jacket and tossed it into the center of the table. "These are the decrypted files from Galerie Noir. They detail how Dominic Falcone has been skimming twenty percent off every joint venture operated by the Five Families over the last five years, hiding the money in shadow accounts in the Cayman Islands."
The room erupted into chaos. The other crime bosses immediately grabbed the documents, their faces turning thunderous as they read through the undeniable financial proof I had uncovered just hours earlier.
"This is a lie! A forgery created by this lying girl!" Falcone roared, pulling a silver pistol from his coat.
In less than a second, Lorenzo moved with blind speed. He drew his own weapon, leaning across the table and pressing the barrel of his gun directly against Falcone’s forehead before Falcone could even raise his arm.
The room went dead silent. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.
"Lower your weapon, Dominic," Lorenzo whispered, his voice dark and deadly. "If you so much as glance toward Clara again, I will end your line right here in front of everyone."
Falcone trembled with rage, but the cold reality of Lorenzo’s promise sank in. Slowly, bitterly, he lowered his gun.
"You think you’ve won, Moretti?" Falcone sneered, his voice shaking. "You took her in because she saved your mother, but you’ve just brought a curse into your house. The Falcone family will tear down everything you own to get to her."

"You are welcome to try," Lorenzo replied coolly, holstering his weapon. He stood up, offered his hand to me, and helped me to my feet. "This meeting is adjourned."
As we walked out of the Metropolitan Club under the furious gazes of the city's most dangerous men, Lorenzo kept his hand firmly locked in mine. I felt a surge of empowerment I had never known before. For the first time in my life, I wasn't running from the monsters who destroyed my father—I was fighting back, and the most powerful man in the city was standing by my side.
