Chapter 3 - INTO THE LION’S DEN

By eight o’clock the following morning, my life as a struggling waitress was officially dead.
A sleek black armored sedan picked me up from my cramped apartment in Queens. Two suit-clad security guards carried my modest luggage down the stairs, while a separate detail was dispatched to secure my brother Leo’s dormitory at his university.
When the sedan arrived at the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower in Manhattan, I was met by a team of personal tailors and stylists. Before I could process what was happening, I was fitted into a series of immaculate, high-end business suits—tailored Italian wool trousers, silk blouses, and sharp blazers that transformed me from a tired, invisible girl into a woman who looked capable of running an empire.
"You look like you belong here, Clara," Signora Moretti said, smiling warmly as she watched me admire my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirror. She placed a stunning pearl necklace around my neck. "My son does not trust easily. In fifteen years, I have never seen him look at anyone the way he looked at you last night."
My heart did a strange, sudden flutter. "He was just grateful that I helped you, Signora."
"Lorenzo does not offer a high-level position out of simple gratitude," she replied, her eyes twinkling with maternal wisdom. "He sees your fire, my dear. Be careful—fire can illuminate, but it can also burn."
Ten minutes later, I was ushered into Lorenzo's private office on the top floor. The room was breathtaking, featuring dark oak paneling, leather sofas, and an unobstructed view of the New York skyline. Lorenzo was sitting at his massive glass desk, surrounded by four glowing monitors displaying financial trades and shipping manifests.
"Sit, Clara," he said, gesturing to the leather chair across from him.
I sat down, pulling out my new leather-bound notebook. "Where do we start?"
Lorenzo tapped a key on his keyboard, and a series of encrypted transaction logs appeared on the main screen. "This is the financial ledger from the Falcone Group's primary front—a high-end art gallery in Chelsea called Galerie Noir. They are moving tens of millions of dollars through fake art auctions, but the encryption key changes every twenty-four hours."
I leaned closer to the screen, studying the numerical sequences and transaction codes. Years of studying my father's old workbooks instantly came flooding back.
"It's not a standard military encryption," I said, my fingers flying across the extra keyboard Lorenzo slid toward me. "Look at the transaction timestamps. They aren't random. They follow the mathematical sequence of the Fibonacci spiral, offset by the zip codes of the banking districts in Zurich."
Lorenzo stopped typing, leaning back in his chair as he watched me work with intense fascination. "You decoded that in less than thirty seconds."
"My father taught me that corrupt accountants are lazy," I explained, a small, triumphant smile breaking across my face as the screen flashed green, revealing thousands of hidden bank accounts. "They rely on complex math to hide simple thefts. Here it is—the master ledger of the Falcone family’s illegal offshore accounts."
"Incredible," Lorenzo murmured, his voice dropping into a low, husky register. He stood up, walked around the desk, and leaned over my shoulder to look at the screen. His chest was brushed against my back, his warm breath fanning against my cheek. "You just handed me the weapon I need to destroy their entire distribution network."
I turned my head to look at him, suddenly hyper-aware of how close we were. Our faces were mere inches apart. I could see the tiny gold specks in his dark irises and feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.
"Lorenzo..." I whispered, my breath catching in my throat.
Before he could answer, the door to the office slammed open. Matteo rushed in, his face grim.
"Boss, we have a situation," Matteo reported urgently. "Dominic Falcone just called an emergency meeting of the Five Families at the Metropolitan Club. He knows someone breached their financial servers, and he’s claiming you are harboring a traitor's daughter."

Lorenzo didn't flinch. He slowly straightened up, his hand coming to rest protectively on my shoulder.
"Tell Falcone I will attend the meeting," Lorenzo said, his voice cold as ice. "And tell him I am bringing my new Chief Financial Officer with me."
