Chapter 3 - The Digital Cage

David tapped a sequence on the digital control pad attached to his wheelchair armrest. Instantly, the large flat-screen TV on the living room wall flickered to life. Instead of a movie or a news channel, it displayed a massive, organized grid of security camera feeds—not just from the hallways, but from inside the master bedroom, the walk-in closets, and even a micro-camera hidden directly inside the sofa’s secret compartment.

Sarah’s breath hitched. She stared at the screen as timestamped videos began to play automatically, dating back over eighteen months. It showed Sarah and Julian mapping out the hidden compartment, laughing as they hid Julian away whenever David’s specialized medical transport arrived to take him to rehab.

"You thought I didn't know?" David asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion now. "I am a software engineer, Sarah. I noticed the anomalous power consumption in the living room walls over a year ago. I noticed the security logs being wiped every time I left for my intensive physical therapy sessions in Chicago. I didn't say anything because I wanted to see how far your depravity would go."

"David... please," Sarah whispered, the arrogance completely vanishing as she realized the sheer volume of evidence against her. "We can settle this. Think about Lily. If this gets out, her life will be ruined at school!"

"You should have thought about Lily before you slapped her for interrupting your twisted little game," David snarled. "You didn't slap her because she didn't knock, Sarah. You slapped her because you were terrified she would look too closely at the sofa while your lover was breathing inside it."

Julian, realizing his reputation as a high-end corporate architect was on the line, stepped forward aggressively. "Hey! You can't use those recordings in court! It’s illegal surveillance inside a private residence!"

"This house is registered under the 'Sterling Family Trust,' Julian," David replied smoothly, his eyes flashing with vindictive joy. "As the sole trustee, I have the legal right to monitor every square inch of this property for security purposes. And right now, you are an intruder caught on camera during a residential break-in."

Before Julian could respond, a loud, heavy mechanical siren began to wail outside the house. The flashing red lights of private security vehicles began to illuminate the gaps in the metallic window shutters.

"You called the police?" Sarah gasped.

"No," David smiled, a cold, ruthless expression settling on his face. "I called my father."
