Chapter 2 - The Architect of Deception

The heavy, automated security shutters of the suburban mansion suddenly slammed down over every window and door, sealing the room in a metallic prison. The loud, mechanical thuds made Sarah shriek and the stranger stumble backward against the wall.

"David! What are you doing?!" Sarah panicked, pulling at her hair. "You're going to terrify Lily! Open the doors!"

"Lily, go to your room and lock the door," David ordered softly, his eyes never leaving the stranger's face.

Lily didn't need to be told twice. She grabbed her coloring book from the floor and ran up the stairs as fast as her small legs could carry her, the sound of her bedroom door clicking shut signaling the start of a brutal domestic war.

The stranger tried to move toward the kitchen exit, but David maneuvered his wheelchair with expert speed, blocking the narrow hallway. "I asked you a question. Who are you?"

"My name is Julian," the stranger muttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. He looked at Sarah, silently begging her to intervene.

Sarah stepped between them, her initial shock morphing into a defensive, arrogant posture. She wiped her own tears and straightened her designer blouse. "Fine, David! You want the truth? Julian is an architect. He’s the one who actually designed this house before your accident. And yes... he’s been with me. For two years."

The words hit David like a physical blow. He leaned back in his chair, his breath caught in his throat. "Two years... inside my own home?"

"Look at yourself, David!" Sarah suddenly snapped, her guilt turning into ugly, defensive rage. "Look at this life! For three years, I’ve been a nurse, a secretary, and a prisoner in this house. I manage your father’s multi-million-dollar real estate conglomerate while you sit here in this chair, brooding and rotting! I needed someone who could actually hold me, someone who wasn't a burden!"

"A burden?" David whispered, a tight, sarcastic smile forming through his tears. "Is that what I am to you? The man who built the software that funds every single luxury brand you wear? The man whose family trust pays for the very air you breathe in this mansion?"

Julian tried to edge around the wheelchair, his tone turning arrogant as he realized David was physically helpless. "Look, David, your wife is right. You can't provide for her anymore. Just let me go, let her file for a quiet divorce, and you can keep your money. Don't make a scene."

David looked down at his useless legs, then up at Julian’s smug face. "You think because I can't walk, I can't defend what's mine? You forgot one detail, Julian. You designed the house... but I built the network."
