Chapter 9 - The Ghost of the Foyer

The following week, the Castillos hosted their first gathering since the rescue—a private, quiet dinner for the security team, Dr. Vance, and the remaining loyal staff who had helped rebuild their lives. There were no corporate barons, no politicians, no high-society parasites. Just the people who had stood in the dark with them.

As the guests laughed and talked in the main dining hall, Alejandro walked out into the grand foyer alone.

The rain was gone, replaced by a clear, starlit summer night. He looked down at the spot on the marble floor where six months ago, a plastic bucket had dropped with a metallic clatter, changing his world forever.

"Thinking about that night?"

Elena walked out from the shadows of the hallway, wearing a stunning emerald green silk gown that highlighted the vibrant life in her dark eyes. She held two glasses of champagne.

"I was thinking about how close I came to walking up those stairs without looking down," Alejandro admitted, his voice dropping into a raw, vulnerable whisper. "Every time I think about those three years... the guilt..."

Elena stepped close, placing her hand over his mouth. She held his gaze, her fingers warm and steady.

"Look at me, Alejandro. You didn't leave me. You never stopped looking. Every single night I sat in that basement watching those monitors, I didn't see a man who had forgotten me. I saw a man who was dying of a broken heart because he couldn't find his other half. Your grief wasn't a failure; it was my anchor. It was the only thing that kept me sane because I knew that as long as you were mourning, you were waiting."

She took his hand, guiding it to her wrist. The bruises were completely gone, replaced by a delicate gold bracelet Alejandro had given her for their anniversary—a stylized infinity loop made of interlocking architectural lines.

"The structure survived the storm, Alejandro. The old maid is gone. The mistress of this house is back. Now, let’s go inside. Our family is waiting."

He smiled, the last lingering shadow of the past three years finally dissolving from his mind. He took the champagne glass from her hand, clinked it against hers with a clear, perfect ring, and led her back into the light.
