Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master Arrives

The storm didn't let up by morning. Instead, the sky turned a bruised, electric purple.

At 6:00 a.m., a fleet of black SUVs breached the outer gates of the Castillo estate. Marcus’s security team immediately took defensive positions, but the vehicles didn't belong to the police or the Moretti cartel. They bore the official insignia of the Federal Intelligence Bureau.

A man stepped out of the lead vehicle. He was older, with silver hair, wearing an immaculate charcoal trench coat. He carried a silver-tipped walking cane despite walking with a perfectly straight, athletic posture.

Donato Moretti. Vivian’s father. The undisputed patriarch of the Moretti syndicate.

Alejandro met him under the grand portico of the entrance, surrounded by a dozen armed guards.

"Alejandro," Donato said, his voice a smooth, gravelly purr that had directed billion-dollar operations for forty years. "We need to speak. Man to man. Before things become permanently messy."

"You have courage coming here, Donato," Alejandro said, his hand resting on the hilt of a tactical knife at his belt. "Your daughter is inside in zip-ties. Your ships are seized. Your empire is bleeding out."

Donato chuckled, a cold, dry sound that was completely devoid of humor. "A few ships, a few accounts. These are flesh wounds, my boy. You are young, full of passion, full of righteous anger for your beautiful wife. I respect that. But you are playing a game whose parameters you do not understand."

He stepped closer, his cane clicking against the wet stone. "Elena found something much larger than a few smuggling routes. She found the digital infrastructure for the entire Mediterranean black market clearinghouse. The data she downloaded three years ago doesn't just destroy my family; it destroys three prime ministers, two major European banks, and the very intelligence agency whose badges my drivers are currently wearing."

Donato leaned in, his eyes turning into two pieces of flint. "You think you can just hand that data to the police? The moment that drive enters a public network, a kill-switch will go off. Your shipping lines will be blacklisted globally. Your assets will be frozen under national security mandates. You will be labeled a terrorist financier before midday. Give me my daughter, give me the ledger, and give me the flash drive Elena stole. In return, I let you keep your wife, and we forget this little domestic dispute ever happened."

"And if I refuse?" Alejandro asked.

Donato tapped his cane against the floor. "Then this mansion becomes a tomb. For you, for your recovered wife, and for every soul currently breathing inside it. Look up, Alejandro."

Through the rain, Alejandro looked toward the tree line surrounding his fifty-acre estate. Lasers—dozens of red, precise dots—were cutting through the storm, painting the windows of the mansion. A private paramilitary force had completely encircled the perimeter.

"You have one hour," Donato said, turning back toward his SUV. "Balance the ledger, Alejandro. A wife is replaceable. An empire is not."
