Chapter 5 - The Architect's Resilience
Inside the medical wing, Elena woke up.
The monitors beside her bed beeped with a steady, healthier rhythm. The chemical flush Dr. Vance had administered was working; the vacant, terrified look in her eyes had been replaced by a sharp, architectural focus. When Alejandro entered the room, his face tense from his encounter with Donato, she sat up, pulling the IV line straight.
"Alejandro," she said, her voice stronger now, the gravelly rasp beginning to clear. "Heās here, isn't he? Donato."
Alejandro rushed to her side, taking her hands in his. This time, she didn't flinch. She squeezed his fingers with surprising strength.
"Heās outside, Elena. He has the perimeter surrounded. He wants the flash drive you took three years ago."
Elena let out a cold, sharp laugh that sounded exactly like the brilliant woman he had married. "He thinks I kept it on a physical drive? Donato always was a dinosaur when it came to digital security."
She pointed to her head. "I spent eighteen months designing the automated cargo routing system for Castillo Holdings before they took me. I didn't write the data down, Alejandro. I integrated it into the encryption algorithm of our primary corporate server. The clearinghouse codes heās terrified of aren't a fileāthey are a living script that requires a dual-key biometric authorization to activate."
Alejandro blinked, a slow, dark smile spreading across his face. "Your biometric key... and mine."
"Exactly," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, vengeful light. "Vivian spent three years trying to torture the access phrase out of me. She thought the chemical injections would loosen my tongue. But every time she drugged me, I forced myself to recode the sequence in my mind using old architectural blueprints we drew together. The key isn't a word, Alejandro. Itās the structural dimensions of our first house in Madrid."
She swung her legs over the side of the bed, her bare feet touching the warm hardwood floor. "Donato thinks he has us cornered. He thinks his money and his mercenaries make him a god. But heās standing on an estate whose entire digital and physical layout was finalized by me when we renovated it five years ago."
She looked at her husband, the love in her eyes backed by an iron-clad resolve. "We aren't going to give him anything, Alejandro. We are going to use his own arrogance to bury him."

She stood up, leaning against him for a brief second to find her balance, before looking toward the room's security terminal.
"Marcus," she called out over the intercom. "Get me a tactical uniform, size small. And turn off the main power grid to the estate. It's time to show these parasites how the Castillos handle intruders in the dark."
