Chapter 2 - The Medical Sector and the Hidden Sector
The west wing of the Castillo mansion was converted within thirty minutes into a high-security medical bay. Alejandro had bypassed the local hospitals, knowing that Vivianâs family held deep political connections in the cityâs medical boards. Instead, he brought in Dr. Robert Vance, the personal physician to the Castillo family for three generations, along with a trusted team of private nurses.
Elena lay on the bed, an IV line feeding fluids into her dehydrated frame. She had fallen into an exhausted sleep, her hand still tightly gripping a piece of Alejandroâs shirt fabric. Even in her sleep, her brow was furrowed, her body twitching whenever the thunder rattled the windows outside.
Dr. Vance stepped out into the adjacent library, where Alejandro stood staring out into the torrential rain, a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand.
"How is she, Robert?" Alejandro asked without turning around.
The old doctor sighed, rubbing his temples. "Physically, sheâs severely malnourished, Alejandro. Vitamin D deficiency so advanced itâs a miracle her bones haven't fractured. But thatâs not the worst of it. I ran a rapid toxicology screen on her blood."
Alejandro turned, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle pulsed in his cheek. "And?"
"High levels of flunitrazepamâRohypnolâand a synthetic antipsychotic called Thorazine-D. Itâs an old-school, highly restrictive chemical restraint used in the mid-twentieth century to keep non-compliant patients cooperative. It induces severe brain fog, memory fragmentation, and extreme docility. If she was kept on a daily low dose of this, she would be completely aware of her surroundings but physically and mentally incapable of fighting back or speaking out of turn."
Alejandroâs fist smashed into the mahogany bookshelf beside him, splintering the wood. "She was trapped in her own mind. In my house."
"There's more," Vance said quietly, holding up a small clear plastic bag containing a medical patch he had removed from Elenaâs upper thigh. "This is an electronic scopolamine delivery system. Itâs military-grade tracking and compliance tech. If she stepped outside a pre-programmed geofenceâlikely the boundary of the servants' quarters and the kitchenâthe patch would deliver a localized electrical shock followed by a heavy dose of the sedative. She didn't stay because she chose to, Alejandro. She stayed because her own body was turned into a localized prison."
Before Alejandro could speak, the door to the library opened. Marcus, the security chief, stepped in, his tactical uniform wet from the storm.
"Mr. Castillo, we cleared the servants' quarters in the sub-basement as you ordered. We found where they were keeping her."
Alejandroâs eyes turned entirely predatory. "Show me."
They walked down through the service elevator, past the expansive commercial kitchens, and down into the old wine cellar vaults that had been converted into staff storage decades ago. At the very back of the corridor, behind a heavy steel door marked HVAC Control Panel, lay a space that didn't exist on any architectural blueprint of the mansion.
Marcus shone his flashlight into the room. It was a concrete cell, no larger than six by eight feet. A single cot sat in the corner, its mattress stained and thin. On the wall, written in what looked like scratched coal or dried blood, were hundreds of tally marks grouped in sections of seven.
Three years of weeks.
But it was what sat on the small wooden crate next to the cot that made Alejandroâs breath catch in his throat. It was a high-definition monitor displaying a live, multi-angle camera feed of the master bedroom, Alejandroâs private study, and the main boardroom of Castillo Holdings downtown.
"She wasn't just being kept here," Marcus said, his voice grim. "She was being forced to watch you. Every time you came home, every time you sat at your desk mourning her, she was looking at you through these screens. And look at this ledger we found hidden under the floorboards."
Marcus handed Alejandro a thick, leather-bound book. Alejandro opened it. The handwriting inside belonged to Vivian Moretti, detailing dates, times, and financial transactions.
The first entry was dated the exact day Elena disappeared three years ago:

Vivian hadn't just hidden Elena to steal her husband. She had used Elena as a hostage to systematically bleed the Castillo empireâs data from the inside out.
