Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Exorcism

The trial of Vivian and Julian Moretti became the media sensation of the decade. The courthouse was packed daily with journalists, corporate analysts, and citizens fascinated by the dark, gothic drama that had unfolded inside the Castillo mansion.

The climax of the trial came when Elena Castillo took the stand.

She looked vastly different from the frightened, broken woman Alejandro had found in the maid's uniform weeks prior. Though still slender, her skin had regained its healthy glow, her hair was elegantly styled, and she wore a tailored cream suit. Most importantly, her eyes no longer held fear; they held an unyielding strength.

With Alejandro watching proudly from the front row of the gallery, Elena testified for three hours. Her voice was steady as she detailed the horrors of the underground bunker, the forced injections, and the psychological torment Vivian had inflicted upon her by making her work as a servant in her own home.

When the prosecution presented the physical evidence—the rusted iron cot, the medical ledger, and the scratched walls bearing Alejandro's name—several members of the jury wept openly.

Vivian sat at the defense table, looking disheveled and stripped of her glamour, refusing to look Elena in the eye. Julian sat beside her, his arm in a cast, staring blankly at the floor.

The jury took less than two hours to reach a verdict.

"On the counts of aggravated kidnapping, human trafficking, corporate fraud, and attempted murder, we find the defendants, Vivian Moretti and Julian Moretti, guilty on all charges."

The judge, a stern woman known for her zero-tolerance policy on organized crime, handed down the sentences immediately. Both Julian and Vivian were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, their entire family fortune confiscated by the state to pay damages to Elena and fund human trafficking rehabilitation programs.

As Vivian was led away in handcuffs, she finally looked at Elena, her eyes filled with a desperate, bitter envy. Elena didn't look away. She simply took Alejandro’s hand, officially closing the darkest chapter of their lives.
