Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

The next morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a cold, gray fog that hung low over the Castillo estate. Dr. Harrison had spent the night monitoring Elena, administering fluids and treating the severe malnutrition and physical trauma she had suffered.

Alejandro entered the master bedroom carrying a tray of light broth and tea. Elena was sitting up in bed, dressed in one of her old silk robes, which now hung loosely off her skeletal frame. She was staring blankly out the window at the mist-shrouded gardens.

"Elena?" Alejandro called out softly, not wanting to startle her.

She turned her head slowly, a faint, fragile smile touching her lips. "Alejandro... it still feels like a dream. Every time I close my eyes, I’m afraid I'll wake up back down there, in the dark."

Alejandro set the tray down and sat on the edge of the mattress, gently taking her hand. "It’s not a dream, mi amor. You’re safe. Vivian is in federal custody. The staff who helped her have been arrested. No one will ever hurt you again."

Elena looked down at her bandaged hands. "She was so clever, Alejandro. The day I was taken... she showed me video feeds of this house. She had hidden cameras in your study, your bedroom. She made me watch you mourn. And then... she made me watch as she slowly insinuated herself into your life."

"Why didn't you try to run when she brought you upstairs?" Alejandro asked, his heart aching at the psychological torture his wife had endured.

"She told me that if I ever tried to contact you, or if I didn't play the role of the mute, broken maid, her family's men would kill you," Elena explained, a shudder running through her. "She showed me photos of snipers outside your office. I chose the basement... I chose the humiliation... because keeping you alive was the only thing that kept me going."

Alejandro pulled her into a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in her hair. "I am so sorry, Elena. I should have known. I should have sensed you were near. I failed you."

"No," Elena whispered, wrapping her thin arms around his neck. "You found me. You heard my voice. You didn't forget me."

Their reunion was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. Marcus entered, looking incredibly tense. "Sir, we have a situation. Julian Moretti, Vivian's father, has just landed his private jet at the city airport. He’s released a press statement claiming that Castillo International is framing his daughter to hostilely take over Moretti Holdings' European shares. The board of directors is panicking. They’ve called an emergency meeting in two hours."

Alejandro’s eyes narrowed. Julian Moretti was a powerful, dangerous man with deep ties to both legitimate international shipping syndicates and underground criminal enterprises. He wasn't going to let his daughter go down without a fight, and he certainly wasn't going to lose the billions of dollars tied up in the Castillo merger.

"Let them panic," Alejandro said coldly, kissing Elena's forehead before standing up. "Marcus, prepare the car. We’re going to the corporate headquarters. It’s time to show the board what happens when you threaten my family."

Elena grabbed his sleeve, fear flaring in her eyes again. "Alejandro, be careful. Julian is ruthless. He doesn't care about the law."

"Neither do I, Elena," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Not when it comes to what they did to you."
