Chapter 6 - The Shadows Strike Back

The retaliation was swift and violent. Two nights after the corporate showdown, the Castillo estate came under siege.
It was three in the morning when the power to the mansion was abruptly cut. The backup generators hummed to life, but within seconds, they were silenced by explosive charges. The estate was plunged into pitch-black darkness, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the heavy clouds.
Inside the master bedroom, Alejandro snapped awake at the sound of the suppressed gunfire from the perimeter gates. He immediately reached under his pillow, pulling out a tactical pistol.
"Alejandro? Whatâs happening?" Elena asked, panic lacing her voice as she sat up in the dark.
"Julianâs men," Alejandro said, his voice calm but urgent. "Theyâre trying to breach the house. Elena, remember the safe room we built in the closet? Go there now. Lock it from the inside and don't open it for anyone but me or Marcus."
Before Elena could move, the bedroom door was kicked open. A masked mercenary wearing night-vision goggles stepped into the room, raising an automatic rifle.
Thwip. Thwip.
Alejandro fired twice, his shots hitting the intruder square in the chest. The mercenary crumpled to the floor. Alejandro grabbed Elena, pulling her out of bed and shoving her into the hidden safe room behind the walk-in closetâs false wall.
"Stay here!" he ordered, slamming the reinforced steel door shut just as another wave of gunfire erupted in the hallway.
Alejandro joined Marcus and the remaining loyal security team in the grand foyer. The mansion had become a war zone. Glass shattered, plaster flew from the walls, and muzzle flashes illuminated the dark in brief, violent bursts. Julian Moretti had sent a professional hit squad to eliminate Alejandro and extract Elena before she could testify at Vivianâs upcoming grand jury hearing.
"Sir! Theyâre coming through the rear terrace!" Marcus yelled over the din of gunfire, returning fire down the corridor. "There are too many of them! We need to evacuate to the service tunnels!"
"Not without Elena!" Alejandro shouted back.
Suddenly, a flashbang grenade bounced into the foyer. A blinding white light and a deafening roar exploded through the space, disorienting Alejandro and knocking him to the floor. His ears rang violently, and his vision blurred.
Through the haze, he saw two mercenaries rushing up the stairs toward the master bedroom. They knew exactly where the safe room wasâsomeone had leaked the mansionâs blueprints.
Alejandro forced himself up, fighting through the dizziness. He dragged himself up the stairs, firing wildly at the ascending attackers. He managed to take down one, but the second mercenary reached the master bedroom door.
With a desperate surge of adrenaline, Alejandro tackled the mercenary from behind just as the man prepared to place a breach charge on the safe room door. The two men crashed into the bedroom furniture, wrestling for control of the weapon. The mercenary was younger and stronger, pinning Alejandro down and pressing a combat knife against his throat.
"Julian Moretti sends his regards," the mercenary hissed.
A loud BANG echoed through the room.
The mercenary froze, his eyes widening in shock. A dark crimson stain bloomed across his chest. He slowly collapsed to the side, revealing Elena standing by the safe room door, holding Alejandroâs spare firearm with both hands, her arms shaking violently. She had used the override code to come out and save her husband.
May you like
Alejandro gasped for air, pulling himself up and immediately taking the gun from her trembling hands, wrapping her in his arms. "I've got you. You saved me, Elena."
Downstairs, the sound of sirens began to wail in the distance. Marcus and a backup tactical unit from the city police arrived, finally neutralizing the remaining attackers. The assassination attempt had failed, but it proved one thing: as long as Julian and Vivian Moretti were alive and free to manipulate their syndicates, Alejandro and Elena would never be safe.
