Chapter 2 - The Secrets in the Substructure

The master bedroom, which had felt like a tomb for the past three years, now felt like a battleground. Alejandro gently placed Elena on the plush, velvet sofa near the fireplace. He immediately wrapped her in a thick cashmere throw, trying to stop the tremors wracking her body.

He called Dr. Harrison, the family’s trusted private physician, demanding he arrive within fifteen minutes. As he waited, Alejandro knelt before Elena, gently holding a warm, damp cloth to her bleeding fingers where the glass had cut her.

"Elena, please talk to me," he begged softly. "How did this happen? Where have you been keeping yourself? Why didn't you come to me?"

Elena shrank back into the cushions, her eyes wide with a deep, psychological conditioning that terrified him. "She... she said you knew," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the fire. "She said you were the one who wanted me gone. She told me you married her... that I was nothing but a nuisance."

An icy dread settled into Alejandro’s stomach. "What? Elena, no. I never stopped looking for you. I spent millions. I almost went bankrupt trying to trace that plane crash in Italy."

"It wasn't a plane crash," Elena said, a tear finally escaping her eye and tracing a path through the dust and grime on her cheek. "I never made it to Italy. I was taken right from the airport parking garage. They drugged me. When I woke up... I was back here. But not up here."

Before Alejandro could press for more answers, the bedroom door opened and Marcus walked in, his expression grimmer than Alejandro had ever seen it.

"Sir, Chief Deputy Vance is downstairs with his team. They’ve secured Vivian. But... you need to see this. We started a sweep of the house based on the staff interrogations. The head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, broke under questioning. She pointed us to the wine cellar."

Alejandro stood up, his jaw clenched. He looked down at Elena. "Stay here, Elena. Dr. Harrison will be here in a minute. Marcus, leave two men at this door. No one enters except the doctor."

Alejandro followed Marcus down into the bowels of the mansion. The Castillo estate was an old, sprawling colonial property with a massive basement structure, including a historical wine cellar that dated back to the nineteenth century.

As they descended the stone steps, the temperature dropped significantly. The air grew damp and smelled of mildew and old iron. At the far end of the cellar, past racks of priceless vintages, stood a heavy, iron-reinforced door that Alejandro had always assumed led to an old utility vault. The door was now wide open, a bright halogen work light illuminating the interior.

Inside was a windowless, soundproofed bunker.

Alejandro choked back a gasp. The room was barely eight by eight feet. In the corner was a rusted iron cot with heavy leather shackles bolted to the frame. A single bucket for waste sat in the corner. There were no lights, no books, nothing but a small slot at the bottom of the iron door where food trays could be slid through.

On the wall, scratched repeatedly into the concrete with what looked like a piece of broken metal, was a single word repeated hundreds of times: ALEJANDRO.

"She’s been here, sir," Marcus said, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "According to Mrs. Gable, Vivian hired a team of private security contractors three years ago to intercept Mrs. Castillo at the airport. They brought her here through the old service tunnels that connect to the outer perimeter garage. The staff was paid off—fifty thousand dollars a year each to keep their mouths shut, under threat of death from Vivian’s family cartel connections."

Alejandro walked into the cell, his boots crunching on the cold concrete. He picked up a small, tattered piece of fabric from the cot. It was a scrap from the dress Elena had been wearing the day she disappeared.

"Three years," Alejandro whispered, the horror of it paralyzing his lungs. "She was right beneath my feet. Every night I sat in my study, drinking, mourning her, thinking she was dead... she was right here. Screaming for me."

"There’s more, sir," Marcus said, handing him a ledger found in a hidden safe inside the cell's outer wall. "Vivian wasn't just keeping her here to get rid of her. She was using her. Look at the dates."

Alejandro flipped through the ledger. It contained pages of Elena’s forced signatures, along with biometric thumbprints taken under duress. Vivian had been systematically transferring Elena’s massive personal inheritance, trust funds, and corporate shares into offshore accounts controlled by Moretti Holdings.

But the most shocking discovery was a medical log. A local, corrupt doctor had been coming to the cellar once a month.

"What is this?" Alejandro demanded, pointing to a series of injections logged in the book.

"Chemical obedience inhibitors and localized sedatives," Marcus replied grimly. "And according to the log... six months ago, they stopped the heavy sedation because Vivian decided to bring her upstairs. She threatened Mrs. Castillo that if she ever spoke a word, revealed her identity, or looked you in the eye, Vivian would have you assassinated. She made her work as a maid to humiliate her, to break whatever spirit she had left, right in front of you."

Alejandro closed the ledger, his knuckles turning white. The sheer, calculated sadism of Vivian Moretti was beyond human comprehension. She hadn't just stolen his wife’s life; she had forced his wife to watch her live it.

"Marcus," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a register that signaled absolute devastation for his enemies. "Get the forensics team down here. Secure every piece of evidence. And bring me the corrupt doctor's name. I want him ruined by midnight."
