Chapter 5 - The Unmasking of the Truth

Three days after the assault, the Moretti estate was restored to quiet order. The Sabatini syndicate had been completely dismantled by federal authorities using the financial evidence provided by Alessandro’s team, and Julian Cole and Vanessa were both facing decades in prison for treason, fraud, and attempted murder.

The dark shadow that had hung over Alessandro’s life for years was finally gone.

In the grand study upstairs, the afternoon sun streamed through the high arched windows, illuminating the dark wood and brass fixtures.

I was sitting on the sofa, watching Emma play with a set of colored pencils at the small coffee table. I had spent the morning packing our bags. Now that the danger was past and the legal battles were over, I assumed it was time for us to leave and build a simple life somewhere far away.

The study door opened, and Alessandro walked in. He looked refreshed, wearing a clean suit, though a faint bandage was visible near his jaw from the fight three nights ago.

He froze when he saw the two suitcases packed neatly beside the couch.

"What is this?" Alessandro asked, his voice dropping into a low, quiet tone as he walked over to the desk.

"Our bags," I said softly, standing up to face him. "The danger is gone, Alessandro. You protected us, and you cleared the Sabatinis. It’s time for Emma and me to find an apartment in the city and let you get back to your life."

Alessandro stared at the suitcases, then looked at me, his gray eyes filled with an intense, raw emotion I had never seen in him before.

"You think my life goes back to normal without you?" he asked, stepping around the desk until he was standing directly in front of me.

"I... I'm just a maid, Alessandro," I whispered, lowering my gaze. "People in your world don't stay with women like me. The socialites, the judges... they will talk."

"Let them talk," Alessandro said fiercely, reaching out to take both of my hands in his. His grip was warm, strong, and unyielding. "For three years, I lived in a house full of people who smiled to my face and plotted behind my back. I thought power was about control and fear."

He pulled me slightly closer, forcing me to look up into his eyes.

"Then you showed up," he continued, his voice trembling slightly. "You proved that loyalty isn't bought with money or titles. It’s built on truth. You saved my life, Elena. You gave this cold house a heart."

Emma looked up from her drawing, smiling widely. "Mama, is Mr. Alessandro staying with us?"

Alessandro dropped to one knee on the carpet, looking at Emma, then looking back up at me. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.

I caught my breath, my hands flying to my mouth.

Alessandro opened the box, revealing a breathtaking diamond ring that caught the sunlight filtering through the window.

"Elena," Alessandro said, his voice ringing with pure, unwavering devotion. "I don't want you to clean my house. I want you to share it with me. I want to be a father to Emma, and a husband who protects you for the rest of your days. Will you marry me?"

May you like

Tears of pure joy spilled down my cheeks. The years of poverty, of fear, of scrubbing floors in silence—all of it dissolved into the warmth of the man standing before me.

"Yes," I sobbed happily, stepping forward. "Yes, Alessandro! Absolutely yes!"
