Chapter 2 - The Box in the Closet

Ten minutes later, the double doors of Alessandro’s private study opened.
Alessandro walked in, followed by Marco. In Marco’s hands was a square cardboard box decorated with tiny blue hydrangeas printed along the sides.
My heart slammed against my ribs. It was the exact box I had seen six weeks ago.
Alessandro took the box from Marco and set it on his heavy oak desk. He didn't open it immediately. He looked across the room at me. I was sitting on the leather sofa, holding a glass of water to Emma’s lips while she quietly nibbled on a biscuit from a tray.
"You weren't lying," Alessandro said quietly.
"I would never lie about something like this, Mr. Moretti," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "I know my place in this house. I only wanted to earn my wage and protect my daughter."
Alessandro walked over and sat in the armchair opposite me. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring at the floor for a long moment before raising his gaze to mine.
"Vanessa wasn't just trying to secure a marriage," Alessandro revealed, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble. "My investigators have been tracking financial leaks in the Moretti shipping logistics for three months. Millions of dollars were being siphoned to the Sabatini family in Brooklyn."
I gasped. The Sabatinis were the bitter rivals who had waged war against Alessandro’s father years ago.
"She needed a marriage to lock herself into my estate permanently," Alessandro continued. "A pregnancy was the only way to force my hand before my board finalized the new security protocols next week. If she was carrying my heir, she would have complete access to the safe rooms, the accounts, and the estate keys."
"She was going to sell you out," I realized, the horror of the situation settling over me.
"She was selling me out," Alessandro corrected. "And if your daughter hadn't spoken up tonight, I would have signed the marriage contract before midnight."
Marco stepped forward, carrying a tablet. "Boss, we ran the receipt found inside the box. The silicone belly was purchased under an alias linked directly to Julian Cole—Vanessa’s brother. Julian was seen meeting with Sabatini’s lieutenants two nights ago in Queens."
Alessandro stood up, his posture darkening into the terrifying commander I had known from a distance for three years.
"Bring Julian Cole to the holding room downstairs," Alessandro commanded Marco. "And tell the guests the party is over. Vanessa Cole is to be turned over to federal authorities along with the financial paper trail."
Marco nodded and left the room, closing the door behind him.
Alessandro turned back to me. The harsh line of his jaw softened as he looked at my tired eyes and Emma’s sleeping form in my arms.
"You saved my empire tonight, Elena," he said softly.
May you like
"I just wanted to tell the truth, sir," I replied trembling. "But... Vanessa was right about one thing. I'm just the housekeeper. When her family finds out I exposed them..."
"They won't do anything to you," Alessandro said, stepping closer, his presence warm and overwhelming. "Because as of tonight, you aren't the housekeeper anymore. You and Emma are moving into the master guest suite on the third floor. Full protection. Twenty-four hours a day."
