Chapter 1 - The Lockdown of the Mansion

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom slammed shut with a reverberating thud that vibrated through the marble floor. Outside, electronic security bolts engaged, sealing the three hundred guests inside the estate.

Gasps flared across the crowd. State senators shifted nervously, socialites whispered frantically behind silk fans, and two bodyguards positioned themselves silently at the exit doors under Alessandro’s cold, unspoken command.

"Alessandro, what is the meaning of this?!" Vanessa screamed, her voice losing every trace of the delicate melody she had used moments earlier. "You are locking people in because of a delusional maid and a sick child?"

Alessandro turned slowly to face her. His posture was imposing, his gray eyes like shards of winter ice.

"If the story is a delusion, Vanessa, you have nothing to fear from five minutes of truth," he said softly.

He gestured to Marco, his chief of security, who was standing near the grand staircase. "Marco. Take two men. Go up to Miss Cole’s private suite. Search the primary closet behind the garment bags. Look for a box printed with small blue flowers."

Vanessa’s face went entirely pale. The carefully painted color drained from her cheeks, leaving behind a stark, terrified waxen mask. "Alessandro, no! You cannot invade my privacy like this! This is humiliating!"

"What’s humiliating is watching a woman lie about a child," Alessandro replied, his tone devoid of all heat. He looked down at Emma, who was clinging tightly to my skirt, her small shoulders trembling.

Alessandro knelt back down in front of my daughter. The sharp, terrifying mob boss vanished, replaced by a man whose gentleness was almost shocking.

"Hey, sweetheart," he whispered to Emma. "Nobody is going to hurt you or your mama. I promise. You did a brave thing tonight."

Emma looked up through her tear-stained eyelashes. "Is the pretty lady mad at me?"

"No," Alessandro said softly. "She’s mad at herself because she forgot that truth always finds a way out."

He stood up and looked directly at me. I was shaking so hard I could barely stand, my hands wrapped around Emma’s small shoulders. The entire room—the richest, most ruthless power brokers of the city—was staring at me like I was a bomb that had just detonated in their midst.

"Elena," Alessandro said, addressing me by my name in front of everyone for the first time in three years. "Go sit in my private study with Emma. Marco’s men will guard the door. No one touches you."

"Alessandro!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a step toward me with her manicured nails raised like talons. "She doesn't get to walk away after destroying my life!"

Before she could reach me, Alessandro stepped into her path, his broad shoulders blocking her completely. "Touch her, Vanessa, and you leave this house in handcuffs tonight."

I didn't wait for another word. I scooped Emma into my arms, pressing her face into my neck, and rushed up the grand marble staircase toward the safety of the master suite, while the ballroom below descended into an uproar of furious accusations and shocked chatter.
